Days after Supreme Court’s observation on Nupur Sharma’s plea, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday took cognizance of Samajwadi Chief Akhilesh Yadav’s tweet on suspended BJP spokesperson.

The Commission asked the Uttar Pradesh Police to take action against Akhilesh Yadav for allegedly instigating hatred and ill-will against Nupur Sharma, who had made controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad in a TV debate.

In a letter to Uttar Pradesh DGP, the NCW chief Rekha Sharma has demanded to take immediate action against the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav under relevant provisions of law. Nupur Sharma is already facing threat to her life and the tweet of Akhilesh is a sheer instigation to the general public to assault Sharma. A fair investigation must be accomplished in a time-bound manner, she said.

The Commission has come across Akhilesh Yadav’s tweet and found that his tweet has been inciting communal disharmony between the two religious groups which is extremely condemnable, Rekha Sharma said.

NCW has also sought a fair and time-bound investigation in the matter. Action taken must be apprised within 3 days, the NCW chief sought in her letter to UP police.

Last week, the Supreme Court had observed that Nupur Sharma and her loose tongue had set the country on fire. She single-handedly responsible for igniting emotions across the country and for that she needed to apologise, the top court had also said.

Rejecting Nupur Sharma’s plea to club all the FIRs registered against her in many states for her alleged derogatory remarks on Prophet Mohammed, to Delhi for investigation, the Supreme Court had said that this lady is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country.

During the hearing, when Singh told the bench that Sharma is facing threat to her life, Justice Surya Kant had replied tha she has a threat or she has become a security threat?

Not only the face but the body should also apologise and should also be punished for disturbing the harmony of the country, the SP chief had tweeted on Friday after the Supreme Court’s observation on Nupur sharma.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday asked Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to take immediate action over a nursing book listing the merits and advantages of the dowry system.

The Textbook of Sociology for Nurses by T K Indrani is approved by the Indian Nursing Council. Ugly girls can be married off with attractive dowry with well or ugly boys’ is one of among the merits of dowry mentioned in the one page of the textbook. The dowry is an indirect way for the girl to avail a share in the family’s property, the screenshot of the page also said.

A snippet of a sociology textbook explaining the merits of dowry is doing rounds on the internet. The snippet also explains how dowry is helpful in establishing a new household and helps to set up appliances, furniture, utensils, and clothes in a house.

In a statement, the Women’s panel said that the matter is of serious concern and the commission has taken cognizance of it. The NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma has also written to Rajesh Bhushan, the Union health secretary, for initiating action in the matter to inform the NCW about it within a week.

Speaking on the issue, Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi urged Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to remove such books from circulation. In her tweet, she also pointed out that the existence of a textbook elaborating the merits of dowry in the curriculum is a shame for the nation and its constitution.

A member of National Commission for Women Chandramukhi Devi on Thursday made a shocking statement saying the gang-rape and murder of a 50-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun could have been avoided if she had not gone out alone in the evening. She said women should never go out at odd hours, news agency PTI reported. The victim was gang-raped on Sunday by an occultist and his two disciples when she had gone to temple.

After meeting the victim’s family, Chandramukhi Devi said she thinks if she had not gone out in the evening or was accompanied by any child of the family, perhaps this incident could have been avoided. But this was pre-planned as she was called through a phone call. She went out and then returned in such a state, PTI reported.

Her remarks were criticised by many. Actress Pooja Bhatt questioned NCW and its chief on the statement. She asked whether the organisation stands by this remark of their representative in context to the Badaun rape case. She asked the NCW to clarify if it agrees with the statement that victim was at fault for stepping out to visit a temple unaccompanied and at the time she did.

The National Commission for Women Chief Rekha Sharma, who sent the NCW member to meet the victim’s family, on Wednesday tweeted and clarified her and the organisation’s stance that it’s not NCW India ‘s view and that she strongly condemns her remarks. She said she doesn’t know how and why the member has said this but women have all the right to move on their will whenever and wherever they want to. It’s society and state’s duty to make places safe for women, she said in another post.

Postmortem reports had revealed that there were severe injuries in the woman’s private parts and indicated that she died due to shock brought on by excessive bleeding.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has served notices to BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh and actor Swara Bhasker for allegedly revealing the identity of Hathras gang-rape victim on Twitter. The commission sought an explanation on the notice and also directed to immediately remove the posts.  

Section 228A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) prohibits the disclosure of the identity of a rape victim. Under the provision, if anyone reveals the identity of a person who is a victim of rape or sexual assault can be imprisoned for up to two years and shall also be liable to a fine.

In separate notices to Bhaskar, Malviya and Singh, the NCW said it has come across several Twitter posts wherein the picture of the alleged gangrape victim was used. In the notice, NCW asked them to provide a satisfactory explanation to the Commission on the move and also warned them to not circulate such photos and videos on social media which is prohibited by the existing laws.  

The NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma told the media that sharing a rape victim’s identity is an illegal offence and the commission would look into the matter. She also said the commission would speak with Amit Malviya as well as the Uttar Pradesh Police personally on the matter. If it turns out that she was a rape victim then the NCW will take the issue forward from their end.

A Dalit woman was allegedly raped by four men on September 14 in Boolgarhi village of Hathras district. She was referred to Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital for treatment but she died later. The body of the victim was cremated by Police in early hours on September 30 against the wishes of her family. This incident led to the protests across the country with people from different backgrounds demanding safety, security and justice for the victim.

The National Human Rights Commission has asked its DG (Investigation) to send a fact-finding team to Telangana, in relation to the encounters that happened today morning. The team, headed by an SSP, is expected to submit its report at the earliest.

The killings evoked mixed feelings – some supported the police action, while a few others slammed the extra-judicial killings.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said, “When a criminal tries to escape, police are left with no other option, it can be said that justice has been done.” Bahujan Samjawadi Party (BSP) Chief Mayawati said that the Uttar Pradesh Police should take inspiration from Hyderabad Police.

Meanwhile, senior advocate Kirti Singh condemned the police action, saying that the police cannot shoot to kill, but could have stopped the suspects by shooting on their legs. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that justice should be done through judicial process, while the National Commission for Women (NCW) Chief Rekha Sharma voiced the same opinion.
