New Delhi Railway Station is set to receive a major transformation in the next four years. According to the sources, the renovation project will be given to investors and distributors from different parts of the world. In a recent report, Railway Minister Ashwani Vaishnav announced a few changes in the New Delhi station redevelopment plan.

In a review meeting on Friday, the minister said that Indian railways have made some changes in the redevelopment plan by withholding the commercial development part from the core station redevelopment.

As per the report, the plan is to construct the double dome architecture structure 450-metre long and 80-metre in height over the station. The project, which is expected to cost Rs 4,470 crore, will have a 25-storey high twin dome. The dome, which will be called Infinity Towers, is projected to cover all 16 platforms of the New Delhi railway station.

According to the redevelopment plans, the New Delhi Railway Station will have multi-level car parking as well as pick up and drop zones. The twin tower will have hotel space, offices, retail shops and resting space. The railway will have its office in a 45,000 square meter area.

Indian Railways have adopted a hybrid BOT (Build operate and transfer) model which would also be adopted for the redevelopment of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CSMT) project in Mumbai at the estimated cost of Rs 1,600 crore.

In a public-private partnership (PPP), railways are renovating their stations to compete with world-class airports. Approximately 123 stations will be renovated to contemporary world-class stations offering basic and world-class service. Following the development of Gandhi Nagar Railway Station, which is similar to an international airport, the railways are currently working on upgrading India’s largest and second busiest railway station, New Delhi.

According to the Indian Railways, over 4.5 lakh passengers visit the New Delhi Railway Station every day. The railways stated that there was a need for world-class amenities and facilities at the station based on these numbers. The New Delhi railway station covers an area of 2.20 lakh square metres.

As part of the redevelopment plan, the East Central Railway is also redeveloping Gaya, Rajendra Nagar Terminal, Barauni Junction, Dhanbad (Jharkhand), Muzaffarpur, Begusarai, Singrauli, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, and Pandit Deen Dayal Junction (Uttar Pradesh).
