Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will support the farmers protesting against the new farm laws which were passed in the Parliament in September. CM said his party will support the Bharat Bandh called by farmer leaders on December 8.

Kejriwal tweeted that volunteers of AAP will join hands with farmers in the peaceful protest across the country on Tuesday. Delhi CM also requested the people to support the farmers and take part in the protests.

Kejriwal’s decision comes on the day when Union minister of state for agriculture Kailash Choudhary reiterated that the three new laws are in favour of farmers and they will benefit the farming community in many ways. Choudhary added that opposition parties in different states are responsible for misleading the farmers of the country by spreading the wrong information about the laws.

AAP leader and Delhi environment minister Gopal Rai also extended his support to farmers protesting against the new farm laws. Rai said the central government is forcefully trying to implement the new laws by showing them the benefits of the laws when there are actually none.

Rai said this is not just the farmers’ fight but the fight for all countrymen. He further said India is an agricultural country and if farmers are unhappy then the entire country is affected. Rai appealed to all the people to join the Bharat Bandh on December 8.

Rai said AAP’s workers and volunteers in every state will participate in the Bharat Bandh on December 8 in solidarity with the farmers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday slammed the Congress and its youth wing members for setting a tractor on fire at India Gate, New Delhi during their protest yesterday against the new farm laws. The PM said opposition parties are insulting farmers and misleading them over the new farm laws. He said farm equipment, like tractors, which are worshipped by farmers, but the opposition was going about setting fire to such equipment and insulting farmers.

PM Modi said the Opposition parties are protesting just for their own benefit as they don’t care about farmers’ welfare.

Speaking on the new farmers’ laws during the launch of six mega projects in Uttarakhand, the PM said the new farm laws will strengthen farmers of the country and there are no negative aspects. Through the new farm laws, farmers can sell their crops and produce to anyone, anywhere they want without any middlemen. The PM attacked the opposition saying that those against the bill don’t want farmers to sell their produce in an open market and want middlemen to earn profits.

Assuring farmers, PM Modi said the minimum support price will continue to be there but farmers will also have the right to sell their produce anywhere.

Without naming the Congress directly, PM Modi accused the opposition of trying to mislead the farmers and said the opposition party has shamed the country with its drama.

Meanwhile, some farmers’ organisations protested against the passage of the new laws by blocking the Amritsar-Delhi railway track even as the government has insisted that they will make them self-reliant. They say the new laws could lead to an end of the minimum support price regime for their produce.
