[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Suman Ghosh’s documentary ‘The Argumentative Indian’ featuring Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen will not be released in Kolkata after Ghosh refused to follow the Central Board of Film Certification’s order to mute words such as ‘Gujarat’, ‘cow’, ‘Hindutva view of India’ and ‘Hindu India’.

The CBFC’s Kolkata office had informed Ghosh that he will be given a U/A certificate only after he drops these words.

“The attitude of the censor board just underlines the relevance of the documentary in which Sen highlights the growing intolerance in India. Such scrutiny of any criticism of the government in a democratic country is shocking. There is no way I would agree to beep or mute or change anything that one of the greatest minds of our times has said in the documentary,” Ghosh told The Telegraph on Tuesday.

Sen, who is presently in Santiniketan in Birbhum district, has refused to comment on the controversy.

“Since I am the subject of this documentary film, I should not pass any comment. It is the director, or other people, who can react. I should not speak on this matter,” he told a Bengali television channel.

The documentary which explores the life and work of Amartya Sen has been shot in two parts in 2002 and 2017. Other than Professor Sen, eminent historian from Harvard University Sugata Bose and Cornell University Professor of Economics Kaushik Basu were interviewed in the documentary.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
