A day after the Supreme Court-appointed technical expert committees’ approval for the demolition of the bankrupt builder Supertech’s twin towers with explosives, the top court on Friday extended the demolition deadline to August 28.

Before accepting Noida Authority’s extension request, the nearly 100-metre tall illegal structures were scheduled for demolition at 2.30 pm on August 21.

The Supreme Court has given the go-ahead to the Noida Authority to raze the two towers by September 4. The demolition process will be started on August 28.

A 7-day buffer – from August 29 to September 4 – was also given in case of any technical glitches.

The Central Building Research Institute (CBRI’s) nod was the last approval needed for setting up the explosives inside the structure of the Supertech building located in Sector 93B in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida.

As per the officials, more than 3,500 kg of explosives will be filled in around 9,400 holes drilled in the columns of the twin towers. Supertech and Edifice have assured the CBRI of using all safety measures in place in the Emerald Court and ATS Village societies, adjoining the twin towers, the officials said.

The Supreme Court had earlier rejected PIL against the order to demolish the twin towers imposing a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the petitioner.

Last year on August 31, the Supreme Court had directed the real estate giant Supertech to demolish the 40-storey twin towers built for violating the construction laws. The towers have 900 flats and 21 shops.
