The swearing in of councillors and voting for Mayor will not be held today following the uproar over Delhi Municipal Corporation’s mayoral election.

Satya Sharma, who has been appointed as the presiding officer for the MCD mayoral election, has said that she have appealed several times for smooth functioning of the House but the ruckus continues. If they sit peacefully the oaths will be administered and if these people do not sit peacefully, then will have to wait till the next date.

Now the decision of when the next meeting will be held is in the hands of Lieutenant Governor. Corporation has a holiday on Saturday and Sunday, a decision may be taken to hold the House meeting again on Monday. The process of mayor election can also be postponed till April.

When Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena’s interim Speaker Satya Sharma began swearing in the proposed members or aldermen, protests broke out.

The AAP councillors were opposing the oath of the nominated members. The AAP corporators gheraoed and manhandled the presiding officer. During this they also clashed with BJP members. After this the election process was adjourned for an hour.

On the other hand, the Congress has decided not to participate in the mayoral election. First of all, the newly elected councilors will be administered the oath of office and secrecy. After this, the mayor and deputy mayor will be elected through ballot paper. 273 members will vote in the Mayor’s election. A figure of 133 is needed for a majority. AAP has 150 votes while BJP has 113 votes.

Irked Aam Aadmi Party councillors have created ruckus after nominated member Manoj Kumar was first administered the oath. Slogans are being raised by the Aam Aadmi Party against the BJP in the House. Tremendous uproar is being seen in the House. BJP councillors are also raising slogans against Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. The swearing-in proceedings have been adjourned.

The best case scenario for the BJP was to oust the Congress from the House and the Congress has agreed to it. In return, the BJP has made MCD Congress leader Nazia Danish a member of the Haj Committee. Congress Leader of the House in MCD Nazia Danish made a pact with BJP and Congress decided to walk out in MCD to help BJP.
