Every year on April 1, Utkal Diwas, or Utkala Dibasa, is observed to honour the formation of Odisha after a protracted struggle to be recognised as an independent state. On April 1, 1936, it became a separate province and the first state to be founded solely on the basis of linguistics.

Odisha was a part of the Bengal Presidency under the British government, which consisted of the present-day Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha. In 2011, the name of the state was changed from Orissa to Odisha.

Odisha Foundation Day: History

Odisha was once a significant part of the ancient Kalinga kingdom. In 260 BC, King Ashoka spearheaded the historic Kalinga War, who invaded and conquered the province. The state was afterward attacked and taken over by the Mughals until the British acquired control of the region’s administrative authorities and partitioned it into small units in 1803.

The state of Bengal took over the western and northern districts, while Bihar and Odisha grew out of the coastal region (then known as Orissa). The new province was established on April 1st, 1936, after decades of struggle under the leadership of Odisha’s prominent leaders.

Odisha Foundation Day: Significance

Among the Indian states, Odisha grabs the third rank in terms of the proportion of its citizens who are indigenous to the land. People join in local cultural events organized by political leaders and enjoy colourful jhankis on Utkal Diwas.

Shops and residential areas are decorated and people enjoy various competitions organized by the government. Fireworks competitions are a typical sight, with different kinds of firecrackers illuminating the night sky.

Natives exchange greetings, perform songs and delve into the state’s history, heritage, art, and traditions to honour the spirit of Odisha. During the celebration, heroic leaders who fought for the state’s establishment are recognized and honoured.
