The Rajya Sabha witnessed several adjournments on Tuesday due to a continuous uproar by Opposition members, including the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party among others, over the issue of farm laws. The MPs raised slogans of ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’, demanding withdrawal of the three farm laws.

Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal and member of the All India Trinamool Congress, Derek O’Brien accused the Central government of running away from discussions on farm laws and Pegasus. Sharing a video of the chaos inside the upper house of Parliament, O’Brien wrote: Repeat of September 2020, in Rajya Sabha today. In the video, Congress MP Pratap Singh Bajwa can be seen throwing files at the Chair in Rajya Sabha.

However, condemning the actions of the Opposition parties, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said the attitude of Congress and the TMC during the discussion in Rajya Sabha has dealt a major blow to democracy and proves that there is nothing black in the new farm laws. Black can only be seen in the clothes of Opposition leaders, he added.

Singh also said since the beginning of the Monsoon session of Parliament, the government has been saying that it is ready to hold a detailed discussion on any subject including those related to agriculture. Demand for a discussion on agriculture was accepted in Rajya Sabha today. As soon as it began, Congress, AAP and TMC adopted an undemocratic attitude. Congress is not able to digest the fact that farmers are prospering with the new government policies, the Union Agriculture Minister alleged.

After several adjournments, when the House re-assembled at 4 pm, Bhubaneswar Kalita, who was in the Chair, adjourned the proceedings till 11 am on Wednesday.

Since the Parliament convened on July 19, the Opposition has been demanding a discussion on farm laws and an independent inquiry into the reports that Israeli spyware was used to hack phones of opposition leaders, judges, activists, journalists, and ministers.
