Are you planning to fly to Sikkim in a few days? Then you must change your mind as SpiceJet, the only operational flight to Sikkim’s Pakyong Airport, has decided to suspend its service, citing operational requirements.

SpiceJet airlines, in a letter to the Director of Pakyong Airport, said SpiceJet has decided to suspend operations out of Pakyong from October 30, 2022, till further notice. It stated that this is due to operational requirements.

This means there will be no flights to Pakyong Airport for the time being. The Pakyong Airport, which serves the state capital of Gangtok and the rest of Sikkim, is one of the five highest airports in India.

SpiceJet uses its turboprop aircraft to travel to Pakyong. Flights to Pakyong were operated under PM Modi’s Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik-Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN-RCS) policy. About 30 Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft owned by SpiceJet are used for regional operations.

SpiceJet made the decision to halt flights to Sikkim after its Q400 aircraft, arriving from Goa, had to make an emergency landing in Hyderabad on October 12 due to significant smoke being observed within the cabin.

The budget airline was given a week to inspect every functioning Q400 engine as per DGCA instructions. It said in the statement released today that it will take all necessary steps to prevent any undesirable situation.

The plane had landed safely, and passengers got off using the emergency exit. According to a DGCA official, one passenger received minor injuries while deboarding the plane.

In response to a slew of mishaps involving SpiceJet’s flights, the DGCA ordered the airline to fly not more than 50 percent of the flights permitted for the summer schedule for a period of eight weeks starting on July 27. The limitations were extended to October 29 last month.

Pakyong Airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2018.
