In a shocking incident, five labourers died and two others sustained injuries at a work site of the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool district late on Thursday. The incident took place in Yelluru village in Kollapur Mandal at around 11 pm when a cable pulling them out of a 100 ft deep tunnel snapped at a lift irrigation project.

Yaladri, the Kollapuri police inspector said seven labourers were doing some concrete work in a 100 feet deep tunnel. When they reached a height of 70 feet, the crane’s rope broke, and they plunged back into the deep tunnel, he added.

According to the reports, five of them were critically injured and the other two sustained minor injuries. The officials said that the labourers were constructing the shaft’s inner wall.

The victims were found lying injured in the ventilation shaft which was being built 100 meters below the ground. Soon after the injured were rushed to Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad in the wee hours of Friday. On reaching the hospital, five were declared brought dead.

The deceased are identified as Sinu (35) from East Godavari district, Bholanath (40) from Jharkhand, Praveen, Kamalesh, and Sonu Kumar from Bihar. All the deceased were in their mid-twenties.

The FIR has been registered in this matter. The police have called it a case of accidental death. The investigation is underway.

The proposed KP Laxmidevipally Reservoir near Shadnagar in Ranga Reddy district is to be supplied with water in five stages via pumping from the Krishna River at the foreshore of Srisailam reservoir as part of the Rs 35,000 crores Palamuru Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation Scheme.

The project was aimed to build irrigation potential in highland parts of the Nagarkurnool, Mahabubnagar, Vikarabad, Narayanapet, Rangareddy, and Nalgonda districts for an ayacut of 10 lakh acres with a plan to increase the ayacut to 12.03 lakh acres and drinking water needs for en route communities, GHMC, and industrial usage.
