Eight opposition MPs, who were suspended from the Rajya Sabha for a week on Monday for their unruly behavior during the protests over the farm bills on Sunday, will join other Opposition MPs in a proposed night-long dharna at Parliament House. The members who were suspended from the Upper House are Derek O’ Brien and Dola Sen from the Trinamool Congress, Sanjay Singh from the Aam Aadmi Party, Rajiv Satav, Ripun Bora, and Syed Nasir Hussain from the Congress and K K Ragesh and Elamaram Kareem from the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

The suspended MPs initially refused to leave the house, they were seen shouting and chanting slogans, prompting Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu to adjourn the House till 10 am. When the House resumed, the suspended MPs continued their protests and the House was adjourned for another half an hour.

Naidu then said suspended MPs had violated social distancing norms and disrespected the protocol of the House. He further added that it is unacceptable and condemnable that they have  tarnished the image of Parliament.

He further added that it t was really a bad day for Rajya Sabha yesterday, whatever happened was not supposed to happen, seeing the members violating all Covid-19 precautions taken by the house and  disrespecting all the rules of the house, it felt painful seeing all this yesterday, said Naidu.

Amid sloganeering and protests by opposition members, Naidu said the division of votes could not have taken place because of continuous disruptions in the House and that the decorum of Parliament was broken by some of the members.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi urged suspended members to leave the chamber. Deputy Chairman Harivansh named at least two opposition members who continued to be in the House when it reconvened after 10:00 am leading to another adjournment for half an hour.

This is not the first time a number of MPs have been suspended in the House. It was also seen during the Telangana issue, a large number of MPs were suspended for their unruly behaviour in the Lok Sabha and during the debate on the women’s reservation bill during the UPA 1 regime.
