The Supreme Court, Friday, junked a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), seeking a blanket ban on United Kingdom (UK) broadcaster British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for producing and releasing the controversial documentary on PM Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The plea filed by Hindu Sena chief Vishnu Gupta, was dismissed by the apex court, who termed the call for banning UK’s national broadcaster as “completely misconceived.”

Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who headed the bench which heard the plea, said there’s no argument in the petitioner’s plea which is completely misconceived, adding that the top court cannot ban the BBC.

Advocate Pinki Anand, who filed the PIL on behalf of Vishnu Gupta, had alleged that the BBC was “deliberately maligning India’s image” and sought directions from the court to call for an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the “conspiracy” behind the documentary.

The plea alleged that BBC has a history of bias against India and its government while also claiming that the BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ is the result of a deep conspiracy against the global rise of India and its prime minister Narendra Modi.

The petition claimed that the film was not only a hit piece meant to target PM Modi and tarnish his image but also represented anti-Hindu propaganda, adding that the contentious documentary meant to tear apart India’s social fabric.

The controversial documentary, which questions Modi’s role during the infamous 2002 Godhra riots and his affect on the rise of militant Hindu nationalism in the country, has been banned by the Centre YouTube and other social media platforms and posts containing any links to the series on social media are actively being taken down.

Opposition parties, led by the Congress, have condemned the ban, dubbing as an attack on free press and free speech. The Congress has said it will organize screenings of the piece in various states.
