Power companies’ employees have expressed their anger towards privatization in Maharashtra. 3 big power companies in the state had accepted privatization. And since then unions of 3 state power companies in the state have warned of a 72-hour strike from Wednesday against privatization.

An official gave this information on Tuesday to media. The call has been given by the Engineers Sangharsh Samiti, a working committee of Maharashtra state employees, officers and power company unions.

More than 30 unions come together against privatization

More than thirty unions of drivers, wiremen, engineers and other workers have come together against the attempt to privatize state-owned power companies, said Krishan Bhoir, general secretary of the Maharashtra State Electricity Employees Union. Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited, Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited and Maharashtra State Electricity Generation Company Limited are state-owned power companies.

He said, the employees of these companies have been agitating for the last two-three weeks, while on Monday 15,000 employees protested outside the Thane collector’s office. Bhoir further said about 86,000 employees, officers and engineers of the three power companies, 42,000 contract workers and security guards would go on a 72-hour strike from Wednesday to protest against privatization.

He further informed that one of the key demands of the protesters is that Adani Group’s subsidiary power company should not be given parallel distribution license to make profit in East Mumbai, Thane and Bhandup in Navi Mumbai.

Indefinite strike from January 18 if demands not met

Bhoir ended the press meet revealing that there is no financial demand in this agitation, but they just want these power companies owned by the people of the state to survive. He said that these should not be sold to private capitalists who only want to make profit. He told that in the notice of strike given to the state government last month, it is clearly mentioned that if their demands are not fulfilled, a warning has been given for an indefinite strike from January 18.
