The Election Commission will announce the schedule of the election to the office of the President of India on Thursday at 3 pm.

The term of President Ram Nath Kovind ends on July 24 and an election for the next president has to be held before that day.

As per Article 62 of the Constitution, election for the next President must be held before the completion of the incumbent’s term.

The EC conducts the presidential polls. The President of India is elected indirectly by an electoral college that consists of parliamentary and state-level lawmakers.

Among all, Uttar Pradesh has the highest value of votes in the electoral college.

Approximately 4,120 lawmakers, including 776 parliamentarians, will elect the new President of India. The total strength of the electoral college is 10,98,903 votes.

The rulling NDA has 48.9% of the votes of all MPs and MLAs.

However, the ruling BJP is reaching out to the Biju Janata Dal and YSR Congress Party to support its candidate for the role of the President.

In 2017, Ram Nath Kovind had secured 65.35% of votes to become the 14th President of India.

In the current scenario, the BJP-led NDA is looking strong and the credit goes to recent victories in recently concluded elections in the five states (Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur) of which the BJP had won four.
