The prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) have been increased by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) on Saturday. The MGL has hiked CNG and PNG prices for the second time in the past three weeks.

The price of CNG has been hiked by Rs 2/kg in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), and the price of domestic PNG has been raised by Rs 1.50/SCM (supply chain management).

An MGL spokesperson announced that the prices of CNG and PNG are all-inclusive. He also mentioned that CNG rates will now go up from Rs.61.50/kg to Rs 63.50/kg. PNG rates will increase from Rs 36.50/SCM to Rs 38/SCM.

About the recent hike, the MGL justified the hike as a measure to meet the domestic gas allocation shortfall. According to sources, additional market-priced natural gas (imported RLNG) is being sourced by MGL. Increasing demands for CNG and PNG are the reason behind this.

The MGL saw a significant increase in the prices of RLNG that is imported. Resultantly, the MGL’s cost of gas has also increased. The new consumer price boost is expected to offset some of the expenditures.

These rate hikes affect millions of PNG consumers and CNG customers. The MGL, however, has assured 60 per cent savings in comparison with current petrol prices and 33 per cent savings in comparison with the current price of diesel. The company also claims a 24 per cent saving in comparison with LPG cylinders prices.
