The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) spokesperson Rakesh Tikait on Thursday said one needs to investigate whether there was a security lapse or the farmers were expressing their anger.

His statement comes a days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security lapse in Punjab ahead of his poll rally in Ferozepur.

Opening up on PM Modi’s security breach issue, Tikait on Wednesday tweeted that there is talk about PM Modi’s Ferozepur rally being cancelled due to security laps in PM’s convoy. On the other hand, the Punjab CM is claiming that the PM had returned witnessing empty chairs, he said.

In his tweet, Tikait also said now it is necessary to investigate whether there is a lapse in the security or the farmers were expressing their anger.

Controversy over security lapses surrounding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab reached the Supreme Court on Thursday when senior advocate Maninder Singh filed a petition seeking thorough probe into the security breach in PM Modi’s convoy at Bathinda in Punjab.

Punjab government have also constituted a probe panel comprising of Justice (Retd.) Mehtab Singh Gill, Principal Secretary (Home Affairs) and Justice Anurag Verma to investigate lapses during PM Modi’s visit to Ferozepur on Wednesday. The panel would submit its report within 3 days.

In a major security breach, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday cancelled his visit to Ferozepur town in Punjab, where he was scheduled to lay the foundation stones of Rs 42,750 crore projects.

Around 30 kms away from the rally venue, when the Prime Minister’s convoy reached a flyover, it was found that the road was blocked by some protesting farmers who were demanding to resolve some of their pending issues.

The prime minister was stuck on a flyover for 15-20 minutes.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Wednesday expressed regret after Prime Minister Narendra Modi cancelled his event in Punjab claiming a security breach.

PM Modi had returned to the airport after his car was stuck on a flyover in Punjab for nearly 20 minutes because of protesting farmers on the route.

There was no security lapse and there was no situation of any attack, he said.

Speaking with the reporters at a press conference, Channi said the Prime Minister’s convoy was stopped way before the spot where protesters were sitting. It takes at least 10-20 minutes to clear any protest site, he said. PM Modi was informed about it and also offered a different route but he chose to leave, Channi said.

Slamming the Punjab government over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security lapse, senior Congress leader Sunil Sunil Jakhar, who was the front runner for Punjab Congress Committee chief, said it was against Punjabiyat and just not acceptable. Amarinder Sing, a former Congress Chief Minister and now an ally of the BJP, also said that Punjab CM should step down.

In response to the BJP’s allegations that he did not receive the PM because of a conspiracy, Channi said he avoided the trip as people close to him have Covid. BJP chief JP Nadda had earlier lashed out at the Chief Minister, accusing him of refusing to take phone calls.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi cancelled his event after a massive security breach left him stuck on the highway for nearly 20 minutes.

A few days before the announcement of the assembly election scheduled in Punjab, the BJP accused Punjab’s ruling Congress of trying to harm Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is the single biggest lapse in the security of any Indian Prime Minister in recent years, BJP also said.

When PM Modi’s convoy reached a flyover, the road was blocked by protestors. His convoy was surrounded by Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel. However, after waiting for 15 minutes, PM Modi cut short his visit and returned to the airport.

Soon after PM Modi cancelled the event, the home ministry has sought a detailed report from Punjab government over the security lapse in PM Modi’s convoy.
