The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has reopened an investigation against former Bihar chief minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family members in an alleged railway projects corruption case.

This move comes after his party joined hands with Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United (JDU) to establish the state’s government. The CBI’s latest move is expected to ignite a huge political storm as the opposition parties continue to accuse the BJP-led central government of misusing the investigative agencies.

The probe started in 2018 when Lalu was accused of receiving a bribe from a real estate major in the allocation of railway projects during his tenure as Railway Minister under the UPA-1 government. However, the probe was reportedly closed in May 2021 after CBI sources said that no case has been made out of the allegations.

Apart from Yadav, his son and Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister, Tejashwi Yadav, and daughters Chanda Yadav and Ragini Yadav are the accused in the case.

The complaint claims that Mr. Yadav accepted a home in south Delhi as a bribe from real estate giant DLF Group, which was interested in rail land lease projects in Mumbai’s Bandra and the renovation of the New Delhi Railway Station.

It is alleged that a DLF-funded shell firm purchased the property at a price significantly below the market rate at that time. The case claims that Tejashwi Yadav and other Mr. Yadav family acquired the south Delhi home by purchasing the shell firm for a paltry amount.

Earlier in April, Jharkhand High Court granted bail to the RJD chief in the Rs 139.35-crore illegal withdrawal from the Doranda Treasury case. The case is related to the fodder scam.
