Two groups clashed and hurled stones at each other after a heated altercation between them over taking out a Ram Navami Shobha Yatra outside a mosque in a village of Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow district on Thursday.

According to reports, a Ram Navami procession was taken out near Shahi Masjid in Madiyav village of Lucknow under the Jankipuram police station area on Thursday afternoon wherein loud music was played on a DJ system by one group as they marched past the mosque.

A senior police official said that a man, identified as Sumit and 10-15 others, played loud music while marching past the mosque, which was objected to by another group, leading to an argument between the two which soon escalated leading to clashes in which stones were thrown and the men from two groups physically assaulted each other.

He said that in the clashes which lasted for nearly 15 minutes, both groups indulged in stone throwing, physical attacks and destruction of property, including damage to the DJ cart.

Soon, a team of senior police officials, including the Assistant Commissioner of Police, from the Jankipuram Police Station reached the spot and nabbed the miscreants, he said.

DCP Qasim Abidi said that there wasn’t any permission for a procession in the area, adding people from both groups were detained and peace was restored in the locality.

The senior officer said that they are scanned footage from nearby security cameras in the areas and further action will be taken based on what is revealed in the videos.

Chand Siddiqui, the councilor of the area, refuted claims by the group that they had obtained permission to carry out the procession through the area. Siddiqui said that no Ram Navami yatra has ever been taken out via this route and “miscreants” merely tried to stir the pot and create unrest by taking out an “unsanctioned” procession, adding that a mutual agreement had been reached in this regard between the Hindus and Muslims in the area.

However, the Hindu group has accused the other group of hurling stones at the procession without any provocation and later staged a protest outside the Jankipuram police station.
