The county woke up to the news of actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra being discharged from an old obscenity case. In 2007, American actor Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty were present in Rajasthan together for an AIDS awareness programme. When the two actors got on stage, a kiss was exchanged. Gere gave Shetty a kiss on her cheek. The incident took place on April 15, 2007.

This little kiss stirred strong and vile protests in various Indian states like Delhi, Mumbai, Varansi, Kanpur and Bhopal. Shilpa Shetty was accused of not protesting to the kiss. Complaints were made, and cases under different sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) were reported against Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty. Some cases were also registered under the Information Technology Act for obscenity.

A court in Rajasthan then issued an arrest warrant against the two actors on April 26, 2007, which was later suspended by a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court. Following the public outburst, Gere and Shetty’s case was transferred from Rajasthan’s court of magistrate first class to Mumbai. The transfer was ordered by the Supreme Court in the year 2017. The Mumbai court said in its decision that none of the news items attached to the case petition proved a common intention. The court, in its order said that Shilpa Shetty appears to be the victim of the alleged crime of Richard Gere, the accused number one. Furthermore, the court said that not a single aspect of any of the claimed offences is met in the complaint.

Ketki Chavan, a metropolitan magistrate removed Shetty of all charges on January 18, 2022. He said that by no stretch of imagination is Shilpa Shetty a conspirator or perpetrator of any crime.
