Rohan Bopanna on Saturday scripted history after becoming the oldest man to win the Australian Open 2024 men’s doubles title. Boppana, 43, won the title alongside Matthew Ebden from Australia.

The duo defeated the Italian pair of Simone Boleli and Andrea Vavassori in straight sets 7-6, 7-5 on January 27 at the Rod Laver Arena.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes to Rohan Bopanna. Taking to X, PM Modi said time and again, the phenomenally talented Rohan Bopanna shows age is no bar. Congratulations to him on his historic Australian Open win. His remarkable journey is a beautiful reminder that it is always our spirit, hard work and perseverance that define our capabilities, the Prime Minister added.

Bopanna has been on a winning streak lately and on Saturday he won his first-ever Australian Open title. Just a few days ago, he was ranked world number first in the ATP men’s doubles and now he has achieved yet another historic milestone. Bopanna seems to be unstoppable at the moment.

The final match between the Italian and Indo-Aussie pairs was full of ups and downs, but Bopanna and his partner remained in control from the beginning. The first set had to be decided in a tie-breaker after the Italian pair showed great resilience and character.

In the tennis match, the Italian duo and the Indo-Aussie duo were competing against each other. The tie-breaker ended sadly for the Italian pair as Bopanna and Ebden showed sheer dominance by beating them 7-0. This resulted in the Indo-Aussie duo taking the momentum into the second set.

The second set was equally contested as both pairs threw strong shots at each other and didn’t show any signs of giving up. The score was tied at 5-5 and it seemed like the set would go into yet another tie-breaker. However, Bopanna and Ebden managed to turn the tables around in their favour. Bopanna, 43, and Ebden, 36, secured victory by winning two consecutive games.

Boppana was among the recipients of the Padma Shri award out of seven, who were bestowed with the prestigious award in sports.
