The new highly contagious Covid-19 variant, Omicron has created concern in countries across the world.

The variant of concern B.1.1.529 was first detected in South Africa and gradually being detected by several other countries including Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Netherlands, Portugal, Scotland, South Africa, Switzerland, and the UK.

Omicron outbreak

To restrain the spread of the Omicron variant, countries are taking necessary precautions and have ruled out strict national and international travel rules. Airports across India have issued strict quarantine and testing rules for all international passengers.

The Delhi government will carry out RT-PCR tests on all travellers arriving from high-risk countries. It has also made 7 days home quarantine mandatory for travellers who will test negative upon their arrival. After completing 7 days of quarantine, the passengers shall take a compulsory RT-PCR test.

The Maharashtra government too has issued an order for a mandatory RT-PCR test and 7-day quarantine for passengers from at-risk countries.

As major airports across India have issued orders for mandatory RT-PCR tests, below are the cost and other details for the test at different Indian airports:

• The Mumbai airport has been ordere all domestic airlines not to board passengers without a negatice RT-PCR test within 72 hours of departure for Mumbai. The rapid RT-PCR test at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj airport will cost a passenger Rs 4500 and the results will be provided in 1-2 hours.
• A RT-PCR test at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport will cost Rs 500 and test result will be provided in 5-6 hours. On other hand, a rapid PCR test will charge Rs 3,900 per passenger and result will be made available in an hour.
• At Chennai International airport, a regular RT-PCR test will cost Rs 900 per passenger and those who are opting for a rapid test will be charged Rs 4,000.
• Travellers opting for RT-PCR test at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru will be charged Rs 500 per test and for the antigen tests they have to pay Rs 3,900 per test.
