The theatrical release of Shah Rukh Khan’s forthcoming flick, Jawan, is nearing. While many of his fans can’t wait to see him back on the big screen, the Bollywood actor recently got into problems with one of his advertisements that promoted online gaming.

A crowd gathered outside SRK’s Mannat home in Mumbai on Saturday, August 26, in the afternoon to protest his support for online gaming apps. As soon as the crowd gathered, Mumbai police increased their security over his residence, Mannat.

Shah Rukh Khan has recently joined the A23 Games Platform as the Brand Ambassador, according to the online rummy platform A23. He shot a commercial for the app in which he says in Hindi, Chalo Saath Khelein which translates as, let’s play together. Untouch Youth Foundation took the lead in organising a protest against it. The organisation announced that it would stage a protest against websites and gaming applications like Zupee and Junglee Rummy. The protesters also expressed their opposition to online gaming sites, claiming that they corrupt and mislead young people.

According to reports, the organisation made an official statement regarding the protest in which it claimed that “famous actors and actresses work in these advertising and they are working to mislead society. On behalf of the Untouch India Foundation, a protest will be organised outside Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat residence.

The younger generation plays Junglee rummy, said Krishchandra Adal, president of the Untouch India Foundation. Big Bollywood stars advertising online games are fooling the younger generation, yet police will arrest someone who is playing Junglee rummy or gambling outside. The Bollywood celebrities are pushing them even though they are aware that it is wrong but they are promoting it because they are getting money. He also said, these celebrities become famous after we watch their film, we spend our money on their film.

The director also said, they demand an end to these commercials. Since they are prohibited, we cannot find these apps on Google. Instead, they are being posted to private websites, he added.

Meanwhile, soon, Mumbai police arrived in front of Mannat, Shah Rukh Khan’s residence in Bandra after the protestors arrived there. According to reports, the police also arrested about 4-5 people. Mumbai police are seen securing the region close to Mannat in a video that has been circulated online.

A software Engineer who lost Rs 70 lakh to online rummy, prompting his wife and children to abandon him, underwent seven months of counseling, kicked the habit and won back his family after vowing to never go back to his old ways.

Vikas(name changed), 40 was on cloud nine last Tuesday as his family returned to his home in CV Raman Nagar. For Vikas gambling was always a weakness. It started with placing bets on local cricket matches in his village in Tumakuru as a teen. His gambling turned into addiction as he graduated and became a successful software engineer with a top IT firm in Bengaluru.

In 2014 he met his partner who was also a software professional, online. Soon both of them got married. The two had two girls. In mid 2022 Vikas’s 36 year old wife came to know about his rummy addiction and wasn’t concentrating on work and family matters

In October she was shell shocked to find her husband had lost Rs 70 lakh from their savings to online gambling. It was the tipping point for her and she took her children and left for her mother’s place. She took up the matter legally, she approached KR Puram police station with a complaint against her husband’s online rummy addiction and the huge losses due to it

Parihar was seeking to reconcile the differences between the couple, invited the women to discuss the matter. She explained the gravity of the situation and the financial burden and emotional trauma she and her kids were going through. The husband was summoned to Parihar at Malleswaram police station towards the end of October

Initially the husband was indifferent and was irritated by his wife’s complaint to the cops and insisted that she and the kids return home. Her husband broke down and said he wanted to win back his family and wanted to put an end to his addiction said Shetty.  The senior counselor of Parihar conducted numerous counseling sessions with Vikas and even sent him to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences for tech de-addiction therapy.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK ) led Tamil Nadu govt is set to bring a law to ban online games like rummy and poker. The state’s Law Minister S Regupathy on Wednesday informed that the DMK government would soon bring a new law to ban online games such as rummy and poker. In an official statement, Raghunathy said Chief Minister MK Stalin had instructed the implementation of the law.

The announcement comes a day after the Madras High Court struck down a recent amendment made to the Tamil Nadu Gaming Act, passed in 1930, which imposed a ban on online games with stakes like rummy and poker.

On Wednesday, the DMK announced that it would bring in new legislation with proper reasons on why these online games must be banned. In a statement, Ragupathy said, following the demand of DMK president and Chief Minister M K Stalin, the then ruling AIADMK government urgently enacted an amendment to the Act on November 21, 2020 to ban the online rummy game and it was the reason for the court striking down the law.

Earlier, the online gaming companies that challenged the validity of the Tamil Nadu government’s ban, informed the High Court that the Supreme Court had clearly pronounced that online rummy could not be banned as it is a game of skill and not a game of chances.

Ragupathy said since public welfare is important, as soon as the order was passed in the court, Stalin had instructed clearly to frame the requisite rules, guidelines and reasons.

While hearing from online gaming companies, a Delhi High Court bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Bannerjee and Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy had said that banning games like online rummy, which are skilled games, is against Article 19(1) which allows the right to practice any profession or to carry on any occupation, trade or business.

The bench also observed that allowing the legislation, passed by the former AIADMK-govt, can be seen as erratic, unreasonable, excessive and disproportionate.
