A girl’s tweet is going viral on the internet where she described how a boy in her institute went the extra mile to help her after she unexpectedly got her period in class. He offered help by breaking all traditional taboos, went to the shop with the girl and got her the pad and an ice cream for her. She showed her love for the city and its people. Many people praised this simple act of generosity, a small kind act that can bring positive impact on people at large in our society.

The post got many positive reactions. People were impressed with the young boy’s gesture and also they were glad to witness such change in the surroundings. Good people are everywhere, they need to be recognized. Another person stated, the good thing about social media is that more people are getting aware about the problem faces by women. Such people has always kept the society’s soul alive, they make it a safe place for women.

The act of goodwill by the boy indicates his bringing and parenting. It is a reminder that empathy has no boundaries. This generation needs more people like him who break the myth and orthodox roots embedded into them by society. To make society more healthy and inclusive for everyone, we need more courageous people to take steps forward to break the social stigma.

There have been several myths attached to the menstrual cycle in India. The concept of purity and impurity dates to Vedic times. Living in the 21st century, it is important for us to understand that there is nothing pure or impure about periods. It is the male-dominated society and institution that determines whether something is pure or impure and moulds it into an unquestionable and unchallenged object of belief. The so-called dirty menstrual flow which supposedly makes women impure is scientifically linked with procreation. The blood and tissue that a woman’s body evicts are not utilized by the body. Menstrual flow is as impure or pure as blood flowing through a non-menstruating man’s arteries and veins.

Given the immense impacts in a girl’s life that occurs with puberty, it is critical to invest in women’s education as a means of influencing young girls, shifting discriminatory norms and debunking these myths. As women don’t live in isolation, it is also crucial to educate men and boys as their silence legalizes and reinforces period myths. In short, to address the issue more holistically, multidimensional approaches are required to connect physical infrastructure, sanitation projects, health education and reproductive health programmes.

The Apex Court of India has sought comments from the Central government, the states, and the Union territories (UTs) on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) asking for instructions to provide free sanitary pads to girls enrolled in classes 6th and above in government schools nationwide.

The joint bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha took note of the social activist and doctor from Madhya Pradesh, Jaya Thakur, and sent notices to the Central government, all 50 states, and all Union Territories.

The Supreme Court requested Tushar Mehta, the Solicitor General, for assistance in the case after noting that the petitioner had brought up an important concern regarding the sanitation and hygiene of female students attending government-run and government-aided institutions.

Notably, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court earlier this month regarding awareness on sanitary pads. It has been demanded in the petition that sanitary pads should be provided for free of cost to the girl students from class 6th to 12th in the schools of the country. The petition had urged the Supreme Court to direct the government to provide free sanitary pads to girl students studying in class 6th to 12th, so that girls belonging to poor and economically weaker sections do not face difficulties in getting sanitary pads.

Petitioner Jaya Thakur has said that 11 to 18 year old adolescent girls coming from poor background are facing severe hardship. These adolescent girls do not know about periods and the hygiene to be maintained during periods, nor are they able to talk about it with their parents. Apart from this, it has also been said in the petition that there is also a lack of awareness among poor family members regarding periods.

Separate toilets for girls in all schools

Due to weak economic condition and lack of information, bad practices and traditional methods are used in poor families during periods. Due to this, the girls of poor families fall in the grip of serious diseases and in such a situation there is difficulty in getting out of school or home. Apart from this, the petitioner has also demanded that separate toilet facilities for girls should be provided in all government, aided and local schools and a sweeper should be appointed.

A Bihar IAS officer triggered a massive social media outrage over her response to a girl’s demand for free sanitary napkins during a seminar in Sashakt Beti, Samriddh Bihar in the state capital Patna on Tuesday.

The managing director of Bihar’s Women Development Corporation and IAS, Harjot Kaur Bamhrah was asked by the girl if the government could provide free sanitary pads to girls as it is providing numerous other facilities for free.

Responding to the question, which got applauded by the audience, the IAS said today she asked for sanitary pads and in future, she will also ask the government for free condoms. She further questioned why people need everything for free and said ‘this mentality is incorrect.’

After the video of the seminar went viral, social media users slammed the IAS for her condom reference to the valid question.

One user wrote being an IAS officer the behaviour was insensible. Another user demanded the IAS termination from her position with immediate effect. Yet another user called her as shameless as present-day politicians.

Have a look at Twitter reactions here:

Following the incident, the National Commission for Women sought an explanation from Bamhrah for her remarks. NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote to Harjot Kaur and the reply must be communicated to the Commission within seven days.

Bihar’s Social Welfare Minister Madan Sahani also criticised the IAS remarks and said the officer should not have discouraged the girls.

Bamhrah on Wednesday responded to the criticism she has been facing online and claimed that there was a deliberate attempt to malign her during the seminar.

Speaking to NDTV, Bamhrah said she is known to be one of the most vociferous champions of women’s rights and empowerment and some mischievous elements against whom stringent actions have been taken by WCDC have now resorted such low attempts to malign her reputation.
