Santoor maestro Pandit Bhajan Sopori passed away on Thursday in Gurugram. He was 74.

Reports said he was going under treatment at Fortis Hospital. His cremation will take place on Friday, June 3. Sopori is survived by his wife and two sons Sorabh and Abhay.

Over the years, Bhajan Sopori won several prestigious accolades for his contributions to Indian classical music. He delivered his first performance at the age of 5 in 1953. In his career spanning more than a decade, Sopori performed across the world including Egypt, Germany, England, and the US.

Bhajan Sopori learnt to play Santoor and Hindustani music from his grandfather SC Sopori and father SN Sopori. He mastered the instrument and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2004.

Sopori was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1992. In 2011, he was honoured with the MN Mathur award 2011 for his notable contribution to Indian classical music and Jammu & Kashmir Government Civilian Award. Besides, he was also honoured with a Doctorate of Literature by Utkal University (Odisha), National Flag Honour of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and others.

Pandit Bhajan Sopori has been accredited with several patriotic songs for India including Hum Honge Kaamyaab, Vande Mataram, Bharat Bharat Hum Iski Santaan, Naman Tujhko Mere Bharat, and others. He has also recomposed like Kadam Kadam Badhaye Jaa, Vijayee Vishwa Tiranga Pyaara, Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna, and Bharat Ki Beti for national integration.

He also composed anti-terrorism songs like Savdhan Mere and Jannath Mere Kashmir for the National Network.

The Indian legendary musician who has won millions of hearts through his outstanding contribution to classical music, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma said his final goodbye to the world at the age of 84 on May 10 in Mumbai.

The veteran musician was born in Jammu and started learning santoor at the age of thirteen. Later, he was credited for popularising the musical instrument.

The Santoor master was among the finest and rare classical musicians who have created a niche for himself with his talent in the world of film music as well. He has given many hit albums throughout his career and composed the best music for several Hindi films in collaboration with the top Indian musicians including classical flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia, which gained the country’s top awards. People used to love their work so much the due so much, that they named the due as the Shiv-Hari music.

Both have given the best music for movies that includes Silsila in 1980. Faasle (1985), Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), and Darr (1993).

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma’s achievements

  • Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was awarded the prestigious Platinum disc for the Hindustani classical music album Call of the Valley in 1967, romantic drama film Silsila in 1981 and romantic drama film Chandni in 1981
  • In 1985, Santoor player was also awarded honorary citizenship of the city of Baltimore, USA.
  • The classic musician also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986 by India’s National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama, Sangeet Natak Akademi.
  • Shivkumar Sharma has won some prestigious awards for his outstanding work in classical music that includes the Padma Shri in 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.

Indian musician and santoor player Pandit Shivkumar Sharma passed away in Mumbai. He was 84 years old. According to the reports, he was suffering from kidney-related problems for the last six months and was on dialysis. However, he died due to cardiac arrest.

Shivkumar Sharma gave a classical status to the santoor, which was once a little-known instrument of Jammu and Kashmir, and placed it on par with other traditional and famous instruments such as the sitar and sarod.

As one half of Shiv-Hari, he composed music for famous films such as Silsila, Lamhe, and Chandni along with flute legend Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia.

Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma has given a huge contribution to the world of cinema for music and arts. The duo of Shiv Kumar Sharma and Hari Prasad Chaurasia, popularly known as ‘Shiv-Hari’ in Bollywood, gave music to many super hit songs. The most famous of these was ‘Mere Haathon Mein Nau Nau Chudiyan’ from the film ‘Chandni’ which was picturized on the late actress Sridevi.

What is Shiv-Hari?

Shiv-Hari was related to the Indian music director pair which consisted of Santoor player ‘Pandit Shivkumar Sharma’ and flautist ‘Hariprasad Chaurasia’. The duet has collaborated on both Indian classical music and Indian film compositions.
