Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the country on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel on Tuesday, October 31. In remembrance of Sardar Patel’s national service, Prime Minister Modi said the citizens are still guided by his dedication to national integration.

On the occasion of Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary, the Prime Minister visited a daredevil stunts event hosted by women members of the CRPF at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat. Notably, Sardar Patel—who is regarded as the CRPF’s founder—had visions that were followed in the formation of the central force.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, on the Jayanti of Sardar Patel, we remember his indomitable spirit, visionary statesmanship and the extraordinary dedication with which he shaped the destiny of our nation. His commitment to national integration continues to guide us. We are forever indebted to his service, the PM said.

On Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary, President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and a number of other dignitaries paid tribute to him. On his birth day, known as Rashtriya Ekta Divas, President Murmu, Dhankhar, Shah, and others attended a special celebration at Patel Chowk in the nation’s capital where they laid floral tributes at the statue of India’s first Home Minister.

Shah, meanwhile, inaugurated the Run For Unity at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and honoured the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations as the principal guest. In the nation’s capital, on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birthday, he also delivered the Unity oath.

Speaking to the assembly on the occasion, Shah asserted that Sardar Patel is the driving force behind India’s unity. He went on to say that Sardar would always have the nation’s gratitude. Speaking at length about the history of India’s unification, Shah said that it was difficult to have a unified India because the British had divided the nation into more than principalities at the time of its independence.

According to the Union Home Minister, Run for Unity is an appropriate homage to Sardar Patel and a means for the Indian people to reiterate their commitment to a united and powerful India.

A prominent leader in the Indian independence struggle, Vallabhbhai Patel was given the title Sardar, which means chief. Sardar Patel was born on October 31, 1875 in Nadiad, Mumbai. He served as India’s first deputy Prime Minister from 1947 to 1950. He served as the acting Home Minister during Indian political integration and the Indo-Pakistani war in 1947. The world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity is dedicated to his role in unifying India. On December 16, he died of a heart attack.

From being called a man without ambition to being known as the Unifier of India

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel passed his matriculation at the age of 22. His elders referred to him as an unambitious man, but he had a plan intact. He became Ahmedabad’s most successful barrister. He served the people as the President of the Ahmedabad Municipal Board.

Apart from serving as the Prime Minister and Home Minister of India, he was also in charge of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

He was assigned the responsibility to integrate 562 princely states with the Union of India. The process began on August 6, 1947. Junahgargh, Jammu and Kashmir, Hyderabad and some other border states were reluctant at first but Sardar Patel’s excellent diplomacy overcame their hesitation and all Princely states were integrated with the Dominion of India. His birth anniversary is thus celebrated as National Unity Day.

His relationship with Mahatma Gandhi

Sardar Patel was a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and he was also a strong believer of non-violence. To quote him, Non-violence has to be observed in thought, word, and deed. The measure of our non-violence will be a measure of our success. While their views on non-violence were united, their faith in its effectiveness were discrete. There was immense respect between the two. This didn’t hesitate them from voicing their contradictory opinions. There were many issues on which they shared differences like non-violence, Hindu Mahasabha, Muslim League and Jinnah, RSS, Communalism and some others.

Various controversies claim that Gandhi favoured Nehru over Sardar Patel and hence resulted into Nehru’s Prime Ministership. However, no contest took place for the first Prime Minister of India. The only time that Sardar Patel and Nehru united against Gandhi was post-partition.

Between the Sardar and the Mahatma, there was a deep, caring and meaningful relationship that stayed intact till the very end.

Remembering nation’s hero

From giving up ambition for his elder brother, Vitthalbhai Patel, winning a case after hearing his wife’s death to becoming a national hero, he was truly a man of great character and perseverance. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was a knight who served Mother India and her children till the last breath.

Ahead of the next year’s Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress’ general secretary Priyanka Gandhi reached Gorakhpur to address a pratigya rally on Sunday. The pratigya rally is a series of rallies being held by the Uttar Pradesh Congress across the state.

Her visit comes on the occasion of the 37th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the 146th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The cut-outs of former PM Indira Gandhi and Iron Man of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel were seen at the venue of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s pratigya rally.

Speaking at the rally in Gorakhpur, Gandhi hit out at Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath alleging that Dalits, OBCs, Brahmins and others have been exploited under the BJP government. The Yogi-Adityanath government is working against the teachings of Guru Gorakhnath, she said.

Gandhi also hit out at the BJP accusing them of selling the assets built over the last 70 years. The Congress established the railways, airports and roads whereas the BJP is selling them, she said.

Since October, Priyanka Gandhi has paid Uttar Pradesh visit several times amid Lakhimpur Kheri violence and the death of a person in Agra custody.

In her speech, Gandhi also targeted Uttar Pradesh’s major political parties including Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party and Mayawati’s Dalit outfit BSP on a range of issues like Covid and unemployment. Where were these parties during the times of struggle, she asked the Samajwadi Party and the BSP. Only Congress has always extended its fullest support to the people of Uttar Pradesh, she said.

In her speech, Gandhi denied allegations of Congress working in collusion with the BJP for the UP polls. She will die but never ever kind of relationship with BJP, she said. She also announced that if the Congress came to power in Uttar Pradesh, 20 lakh youths would be given jobs, women would get the facility of free bus travel and fishing would be given the status of farming.

India, the biggest milk producer country in the world, had made a small start towards the milk revolution 75 years ago when Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited (KDCMPUL) collected 250 litres of milk from two villages in modern-day Anand.

Eventually, the KDCMPUL, which was lacking in scale, has become not just a business, but a call to end the monopoly of Polson Dairy, a private company that had flourished under the British Raj.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played an important role in this call.

Before the start of the milk movement in India, farmers were unable to sell their milk in the market without the help of middlemen. They were totally dependant on the mercy of middlemen and only the Polson Dairy had the right to buy milk from the entire Kaira district. The farmers were angry because Polson exploited them.

This was the first time that the British had entered the dairy sector of India.

A delegation of farmers from Gujarat came to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and told him about their inability to send their milk to the markets without the help of middlemen.

Sardar Patel, who advocated farmers’ cooperatives as early as 1942, reiterated his advice that farmers should sell their milk through their own cooperative and these cooperative societies should have its own plants. He also advised the farmers to seek permission from the Britishers to set up such cooperative societies in India.

If their demand is turned down, they should refuse to sell their milk to middlemen and go on strike and due to such strike, the middleman and the company will also suffer some loss as they will not be able to sell their milk for some time.

If they are ready to bear the loss, Patel is ready to lead them, he had said.

The farmers’ delegation immediately accepted Patel’s proposal. After this Patel sent his trusted deputy Morarjibhai Desai to organize a milk cooperative in Kaira district.

Desai held a meeting on January 4, 1946 at Samarkha village in Kaira district. Among others, future PM Morarji Desai, and freedom fighter Tribhuvandas Patel, now fondly remembered as Tribhuvan kaka were part of the delegation.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The granddaughter-in-law of Mahatma Gandhi Shivalaxmi Gandhi suffered difficulty trying to register a charitable trust when an official of the charity commissionerate in Surat criticized a representative of her for “using” Gandhi’s name and also added that the work will only be done if she would personally visit the office.

“The descendants of Sardar Patel never used to take his name. Why are the descendants of Mahatma Gandhi taking his name to get work done?” Assistant charity commissioner of Surat RV Patel asked when Parimal Desai, who on behalf of Shivalaxmi Gandhi had gone to the charity Commissioner’s office to get a newly formed trust registered.  Desai had been trying for four months to get the work done.

On Monday afternoon, all the trust members of Dr Shiva and Kanu Ramdas Gandhi Charitable Trust took the wheelchair-bound Shivalaxmi to the office of Assistant Charity Commissioner Officer R V Patel. This time, the work was done within ten minutes.

A couple of months ago, Shivalaxmi expressed Parimal Desai her desire to start a trust to use her life’s savings and pension for the education of underprivileged students of Surat.

Shivalaxmi, who holds a doctorate in biochemistry and has worked as a research scientist in the United States, settled down in Bhimrad village in Surat after the death of her husband, Kanu Gandhi on November 7, 2016. Kanu Gandhi, the son of Ramdas Gandhi, was 87 when he died. He had been a mathematician who worked as a scientist in NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, US). The couple had left the US a few years ago and settled in Surat.

On account of her age and poor health, Dr Shivalaxmi pressed Desai to register the trust right away. Acting on her request, Desai, along with his son Hardik Desai, Balvant Patel of Bhimrad village and one Ravi Juneja, got the documents ready. Desai tried for four months to get the paperwork cleared.

Around a month ago, finally Assistant charity commissioner RV Patel of Surat Charity Commissioner’s office told Parimal Desai that the settler (donor) of the trust must come personally to get the work done. His office is located on the second floor of the building with no elevators.

“I told him that Dr Shivalaxmi is 92 years old and cannot come to the office due to her old age and illness, Parimal Desai told The Indian Express. “I also offered to pick up and drop the officials in my car to Dr Shivalaxmi’s place and back. Patel refused, saying there is no such provision.” That is when Desai informed the official that Dr Shivalaxmi was the granddaughter-in-law of Mahatma Gandhi and that she wanted to open the trust for the education of underprivileged students. “Patel, in front of 20 people (other applicants), told me loudly ‘The descendants of of Sardar Patel never use his name. Why are the descendants of Mahatma Gandhi using his name to get work done?’” Desai said.

Feeling insulted by the officials’ behavior he came back and told the happenings in front of the members of the trust where Dr Shivalaxmi was also present.

“One of the trust members told us that the work would be done if they were to pay a bribe of Rs 5,000 to the official,” said Desai. “Shocked by this, Dr Shivalaxmi told me she would not pay a bribe and would go to the charity commissioner’s office herself and get the documents cleared.” And so she did on Monday.

The 182-metre tall statue of freedom fighter and India’s first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel built near the Sardar Sarovar dam was dedicated to the nation on his birth anniversary today (Wednesday, October 31), by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a grand ceremony.

The statue of Patel is an “answer to those who question India’s existence”, PM Modi said at the inaugural ceremony in Gujarat’s Kevadiya district. “It shows that India was, is and always will be eternal,” he said.

Air Force planes showered flower petals on the statue in a grand inaugural event on the banks of the Narmada.

Built at a cost of Rs 2,989 crore, the “Statue of Unity” is the world’s tallest statue, as it stands 177 feet higher than China’s Spring Temple Buddha, currently the world’s tallest statue. It is nearly twice as tall as USA’s iconic Statue of Liberty which is 93 metres tall.Sardar Patel’s ‘Statue of Unity’, tallest in the world, dedicated to the nation

Apart from the statue itself, there are five other related sites that are constructed along with the world’s tallest statue. These include the walkway, the ticket counter, the food court, the four-lane approach highway, and the ‘Shrestha Bharat Bhavan’ – a 52-room three-star lodging facility for the visitors coming to see the monument.

The statue stands on Sadhu island on the Narmada, 3.2 km downstream of Sardar Sarovar Dam. The statue is designed by Padma Bhushan-winning sculptor Ram V Sutar and has been built by Larsen and Toubro and the state-run Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd. It shows Patel wearing a traditional dhoti and shawl, towering over the Narmada River. The height was picked as ‘182’ metre to match the total Assembly constituencies in Gujarat.

Paying tributes to Sardar Patel on his birth anniversary, Modi recalled the contribution of Sardar Patel to unifying the country after Independence as the great leader brought more than 500 princely states on a common platform to join the Union of India.

“Without Sardar, we would not have imagined a railway line from Kashmir to Kanyakumari,” Modi said.

Crediting Sardar Patel for a “united India,” Modi said, “Had Sardar Patel not united the country, we would need visas to see lions or pay homage at Somnath or view the Charminar in Hyderabad. Patel converted India’s diversity into its biggest strength. The country is today following the path shown by Patel and is moving towards becoming the world’s greatest economic and strategic power.”

The PM also took the opportunity to hit out at those who have criticised his government for spending approximately Rs 3,000 crore to build the world’s tallest statue. The Statue of Unity has, drawn flak from tribals and farmers living in the region who called it a “mass destruction” of natural resources. They had also called for a boycott of the event.

Launching an attack on those opposing the Statue of Unity, PM Modi said he is “amazed” that protesters are giving it a “political colour.” “The statue is a symbol of country’s respect to this great man. Praising great icons like Patel has also brought us criticism. It seems like we have committed a big crime,” he said.

“I find it amusing when some people of our own country dare to see this initiative from a political view and criticise us as if we have committed a huge crime. Is remembering the country’s great personalities a crime?” he said.

The Sardar Patel statue, the Mahatma Mandir convention and exhibition centre in Gandhinagar, Shivaji Statue in Maharashtra, Ambedkar Memorial and Shyamji Krishna Verma’s memorial were examples of reliving the history and recalling the supreme contributions made by those during the Freedom movement, Modi noted.

He also said that the statue will promote the livelihood of the people in the area. “This is the tallest statue in the world. People across the world will visit this site and remember it. The contribution of the tribals, farmers and villagers, who helped to make the Statue of Unity cannot be ignored. The statue will bring prosperity to the tribals, farmers and villagers in this region. It will lead to job creation and promote tourism in the area,” Modi said.

“The world’s tallest statue would remind the entire world, the future generations about the courage, capabilities and resolution of the person who did this holy work of thwarting the conspiracy to disintegrate Mother India into pieces,” the prime minister said addressing a gathering after inaugurating the monument. This (statue) is a source of unity…with this sentiment we should march…and march with a dream to make the country ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ (One India, Superior India),” he added.

“Like Sardar Patel united the country geographically by merging erstwhile princely states, we have united the country economically by bringing in GST,” the PM said. “We are expanding Sardar Patel’s resolve of uniting the country by introducing various schemes, such as One Nation One Grid, eNAM and Bharatmala. Through such schemes of connecting the country, we are committed to make Ek Bharat Shreshth Bharat(One India Best India)” he said.

The statue was conceptualised by Modi when he was Gujarat Chief Minister. The foundation stone was laid in October 2013. “It is my honour that I got a chance to pay the tribute to the great man. It is Patel’s efforts that have led our country to what it is today. Today is a day that will be remembered in the history of India. No Indian will ever forget this day.”

Also present at the venue were Gujarat Governor O P Kohli, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Deputy CM Nitin Patel, BJP chief Amit Shah, Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala and Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel.
