The Delhi government has decided to reopen schools in the capital from January 18 for students of Classes 10 and 12. The government has asked all school authorities in Delhi to follow Covid-19 safety protocols and follow social distancing norms properly when the schools re-open. Schools in Delhi have been shut since March 2020 in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, who also holds the Education portfolio, made the announcement on his Twitter handle. He said government of Delhi has decided to reopen the schools for students of classes 10 and 12 due to the upcoming board exams and practical exams for 2020-21. He said students can attend classes with the consent of their parents.

Earlier, Sisodia had said schools in Delhi will reopen once the Covid-19 vaccine is made available to the public. Vaccination is due to begin in Delhi and other parts of the country from January 16, the coming Saturday.

Sisodia took the decision to reopen schools so that senior students can prepare for the board exams. All schools in Delhi had been conducting online classes for students during the lockdown.

Reports said Delhi recorded 386 fresh coronavirus cases on Tuesday. With this, the tally of Covid-19 cases in the capital has reached over 6.30 lakh, while the death toll rose to 10,707.

All across the country, the number of coronavirus cases reported on Wednesday was 15,968, 202 deaths were also reported. So far, more than 1 crore and 4.95 lakh people have been infected with the virus, of which 2.14 lakh are active cases.
