A college girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by an Uber autorickshaw driver in Chennai on Sunday night. The driver fled away when the girl raised an alarm.

Sharing this incident on Twitter, Asian College of Journalism’s (ACJ) student Ishita Singh wrote that she booked a Uber autorickshaw ride from a restaurant to a city hotel in Semmanchari. The incident occurred when her friend was making the payment and she was stepping out of the auto. To fight back, she screamed. They also tried to stop him but somehow he (the driver) managed to escape. She immediately called the police but there was no response.

The college student alleged that the Uber Auto driver named Selvam sexually assaulted her by pressing her right breast, near Ibis OMR Hotel, when her friend and she returned from East Coast Madras to the hotel.

She said that after waiting for 30 minutes, an inspector along with a man came to the hotel to investigate the matter. He asked them to wait till the morning to file an FIR, as there was no lady officer at the station. When she asked about the lady officer, the police allegedly said that it was an order of the government. She had to file the complaint outside the police station. She alleged that the station in charge gave them an A4 sheet to write an application instead of filing an FIR.

Nearly a month ago, six men were arrested by the Chennai police for kidnapping and raping a 40-year-old woman at knifepoint at the Bypass road of the city.

The Chennai police said that the victim was returning home after attending a temple festival. She sent her children along with her husband and booked the cab.

Uber launched an emergency assistance feature in July this year. It said that in case of any emergency, the riders or drivers would be able to share their live location.
