Daredevil Jammu and Kashmir policeman Mudasir Ahmed Sheikh, who laid down his life after gunning down three Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists in an encounter in Valley’s Baramulla district last year, was conferred with the Shaurya Chakra Republic Day eve.

Sheikh who served as Constable in the Jammu and Kashmir police, was slain during an encounter with Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists in Kreeri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on May 25, 2022.

Constable Sheikh, fondly knows as ‘Bindaas’ to his friends and colleagues, was conferred India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, Shaurya Chakra, for his supreme courage.

Sheikh was a resident of border town Uri in Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

On May 25 last year, acting on specific intel, a joint team of the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, had set up checkpoints at several places to intercept the terrorists in the area.

A group of terrorists were intercepted near Shrakwara-Najibhat Crossing in Kreeri and opened fire at the security men. A gunfight ensued in which three foreign terrorists were neutrailised, however, Sheikh also lost his life in the firefight.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the slain cop’s family on October 5 last year during his maiden visit to the Valley following the abrogation of Article 370.

Shah interacted with Sheikh’s family and later visited the graveyard and prayed for the martyred cop.

In a statement issued on Twitter Additional Director General of Police (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar said no salute was enough for a larger-than-life hero like Constable Sheikh.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In one of the rare occasions, President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday awarded Shaurya Chakra to 16-year-old Irfan Ramzan Sheikh for fighting militants who attacked his residence in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Shaurya Chakra is usually awarded to armed forces and para-military personnel for “gallantry otherwise in the face of the enemy”.

During the intervening night of October 16-17 of 2017, terrorists cordoned off the house of Sheikh. His father Mohammad Ramzan was an ex-sarpanch with affiliations to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

When Sheikh, the eldest son of Mohammad Ramzan, opened the door, he found three terrorists in the verandah of the house armed with rifles and grenades.

“Sensing that the militants could harm his family, he exhibited highest degree of courage and faced the militants for sometime so as to avoid their entry inside the house. In meantime, his father came out and the militants pounced on him, resulting in scuffle,” the citation for the award read.

Sheikh did not think for a moment for his own safety and pounced upon the terrorists for safeguarding the life of his father and other family members, it read.

The terrorists also resorted to indiscriminate firing, resulting in severe injury to Sheikh’s father. He later succumbed.

However, Sheikh did not lose courage and continued to engage in scuffle with one of the militants, who resorted to indiscriminate firing resulting in severe injuries to the militant as well.

On seeing one of their associates injured, the terrorists tried to flee. However, Sheikh chased them and they left the body of their fellow militant behind.

“Irfan Ramzan Sheikh exhibited the extraordinary show of bravery and maturity in such a small age,” the citation read.

Currently, studying in Class X, Sheikh aspires to become an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer.
