As Pune is witnessing a huge surge in Covid-19 infections, the beds in one of the city’s hospitals have run out of beds and been forced to provide oxygen to the Covid patients in the waiting area or a makeshift triage. As hospital authorities struggle to provide beds to patients, they are treated in the triage area where seven beds have been set up.

The Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pune has 400 beds including 55 in the ICU (intensive care unit) but no single bed is available today. Ventilators too are running short of supplies with only 79 available across Pune.

Dr. Kaustubh Kahane, an Assistant Professor at YCM hospital, said there is a constant surge in patients in PCMC (Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation) limits and outside. Patients who complain about breathlessness are immediately put on oxygen support in the triage until the hospital authorities find them a bed. When a new patient arrives, the hospital has to take a call to admit them depending on the severity of the illness. If a patient needs oxygen support and no bed is available, then the hospital authorities ensure the patient does not suffer and gives oxygen support immediately.

Pune reported 8,075 new Covid cases on Monday, taking the total number of cases to 5.8 lakh-mark. The Pimpri Chinchwad township alone reported 2,152 new cases, to take its overall count past 1.53 lakh.

Pune is one of the worst affected cities by the fresh wave of coronavirus infections. On Friday Pune authorities ordered a 6 pm to 6 am curfew and directed that religious places, shopping malls hotels and bars, and cinema theatres shut down for a week.

Maharashtra has contributed 57% of the total cases and 47% of the deaths in the country over the last 14 days.
