Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has been awarded one year of rigorous imprisonment in the 1988 road rage case in which Patiala resident Gurnam Singh had died. The punishment has been awarded to Sidhu under Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Reports said the Sidhu will be taken into custody by Punjab Police as per the order. The order was delivered by a bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul. Justice SK Kaul dismissed the petition that was filed under Section 304 of the IPC. Earlier, the Apex Court had reserved the order on an application seeking to enlarge the scope of notice in the 32-year-old road rage case against Sidhu.

Soon after Sidhu was sentenced to one year in jail, he tweeted that he will submit to the majesty by law.

Have a look at Navjot Singh Sidhu’s tweet:

A review petition was filed by the victim’s family that sought punishment for an offence of a more serious category than causing hurt leading to enhancement of punishment. Sidhu had urged the SC not to punish him with a jail term.

In March, the Congress leader had told the SC that the plea seeking enlargement of the scope of notice in the matter relating to the sentence awarded to him in the case is an abuse of process.

Navjot Singh Sidhu was held guilty in May 2018 of the offence of voluntarily causing hurt to a 65-year-old man in the case and was let off with a fine of Rs 1,000.

According to the prosecution, Sidhu and Sandhu were in a Gypsy parked in the middle of a road near the Sheranwala Gate Crossing in Patiala on December 27, 1988, when the victim and two others were on their way to the bank to withdraw money.
