Moreover, street markets in Thanjavur, in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, are overrun with a specific kind of bobblehead toy. The Thanjavur Thalaiyatti Bommai, which means ‘The Head Shaking Doll of Thanjavur,’ is how people refer to it in Tamil.

The two elements of the colourfully painted clay bommai (a kind of doll), in which the whole body and the head that hangs loosely on a little hinge rising from the neck typically represent a classical dancer or an elderly couple. Even a strong breeze or a simple tap on the head can cause the head to shake in an almost circular motion.
