The Central government on Wednesday served a notice to airline SpiceJet over a number of increasing technical malfunctioning incidents in the last few days.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also sought an explanation from the airline on the same.

The airline has reported 8 incidents of technical malfunctioning in the last 18 days. In its previous malfunctioning incident on May 4, a Cargo plane to China turned back to Kolkata after weather radar failed.

It was started last month on May 4 when the Chennai-Durgapur aircraft turned back after one of its engines had to be shut down mid-air due to oil filter warning. While on May 28, a Mumbai-Gorakhpur flight returned to base after its windshield cracked at 23,000 feet.

In its notice to SpiceJet, the government said the airline is operating its fleet on MEL, or Minimum Equipment List, which means the aircraft is considered safe to fly but not all systems are necessarily operational.

It has been observed that at a number of occasions, the aircraft either turned back to its originating station or continued landing at the destination with degraded safety margins, the DGCA said in the notice.

Tweeting a copy of the DGCA notice to Spice Jet, the Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said passenger safety is paramount. Even the smallest error hindering safety will be thoroughly investigated and course-corrected, he said in his tweet.

The airline has been running into losses for the last 3 years and has reported a net loss of Rs 316 crore, Rs 934 crore and Rs 998 crore in 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21, respectively.

The financial assessment carried out by DGCA in September 2021 has also revealed that the airline is operating on cash and carry and suppliers/approved vendors are not being paid on regular basis, leading to a shortage of spares.

The low-cost carrier SpiceJet has been facing a couple of issues concerning aircraft maintenance in the recent past.
