A SpiceJet flight got stuck in a turbulence, due to which several people were injured in May, earlier this year. A passenger who was injured in this accident has died in a hospital in West Bengal while undergoing treatment.

A 48-year-old passenger, Akbar Ansari, who was a resident of Jharkhand’s Giridih district, was among the 17 injured who were on board the SG-945 flight of a Boeing B737 aircraft. Those among injured included 14 passengers and three cabin crew staff. A total of 195 people were traveling in this flight.

Akbar Ansari’s death certificate said that he died on September 26 due to spinal injury and shock after being treated at the Mission Hospital in Durgapur for about five months. Akbar suffered polytrauma in flight. He was admitted to the hospital on May 2. He died on the evening of September 26 after battling for two-and-a-half months.

A DGCA official said on condition of anonymity that Ansari had suffered serious spinal injuries. There was a fracture around his neck, reports said. He was undergoing treatment at the Mission Hospital in Durgapur. He was on a ventilator for many days before he died. The official said that this is the second death in India due to the injury caused due to the flight getting stuck in turbulence. Airline had paid for the passenger’s treatment

Akbar Ansari was accompanied by his brother Maulana Akhtar and another family member on the Mumbai-Durgapur SpiceJet flight. Ansari’s brother Maulana Akhtar said that the airline had paid the full amount for Akbar’s treatment. However, no compensation has been given so far. He added that all three of them were sitting on our seats with belts. About 20 minutes before landing, the turbulence in the flight intensified. Despite wearing a seat belt, his brother’s head hit the roof of the plane’s cabin twice, causing serious injuries to his spinal cord and neck, he added.

SpiceJet’s Mumbai-Durgapur flight faced major turbulence during descent due to which 17 passengers were injured. According to reports, the injured passengers have been taken to hospital.

The Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday morning said that they have ordered a regulatory investigation into the SpiceJet flight turbulence incident.

They also said that some of the passengers sustained head injuries and received stitches, while one passenger said that he suffered a spinal injury in the mishap.

The order further read that they are deputing teams for regulatory investigation while medical reports of the passengers are awaited.

The spokesperson of SpiceJet said that on May 1, SpiceJet Boeing B737 aircraft operating flight SG-945 from Mumbai to Durgapur encountered severe turbulence during descent which unfortunately resulted in injuries to a few passengers.

The spokesperson further said that immediate medical assistance was provided upon the arrival of the aircraft in Durgapur.

SpiceJet also expressed its regret at this unfortunate incident and is providing all possible medical help to the injured.
