President Ram Nath Kovid on Saturday presented Swachh Survekshan Awards 2021 to the representatives of the state declared as the cleanest cities and states of the country at Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan.

Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city has retained the top position as India’s cleanest city in the list of Swachh Survekshan awards 2021. The city has been declared as India’s cleanest city for the 5th consecutive year at the 6th Swachh Survekshan Awards announced on Saturday.

Taking to Twitter, Union housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri congratulated Indore and its people, political leaders and municipal corporation for retaining the top position in the list of India’s cleanest cities and states.

While Surat (Gujarat) and Vijaywada (Andhra Pradesh) grabbed the second and third spot in the Centre’s latest annual cleanliness award list.

Surat which had grabbed the second spot in the cleanest cities’ list last year, has retained its position this year as well while Vijaywada displaced navi Mumbai to grab 3rd spot.  In 2020, Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra was declared the third cleanest city in India.

Among Indian states, Chhattisgarh has been awarded as the country’s cleanest state.

In other categories, Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi won the award for the cleanest Ganga town, while Ahmedabad cantonment was awarded as the cleanest cantonment of the country.

A total of 4,320 cities participated in the 2021 edition of the Swachh Survekshan.

Last year, Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Rajkot and Surat (Gujarat), Mysore (Karnataka), Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra), and Ambikapur (Chhattisgarh) were given five-star ratings.
