  1. Dr Radhakrishnan chose philoshophy for his MA degree. The reason behind his decision were the free textbooks he got from a cousin. His father wanted him to become a priest at a temple after he completes his school education. However, he bagged a scholarship from the Madras Christian College and pursued BA in 1906. The philospher was initially opting for physical sciences for his masters degree. At the end, he chose Philosophy because he got free textbooks from a cousin who had just graduated in the subject. Later, he fell in love with the subject.
  2. The famous Indian thinker once greeted Chairman Mao Zedong with a pat on the cheek. Radhakrishnan was on a visit to China in September 1957 as India’s Vice President. After shaking hands with the Chinese Chairman, he patted on his cheeks. He went on to say, “Mr Chairman, don’t be alarmed, I did the same to Stalin and the Pope!”
  3. Apart from being a stern headmaster, Radhakrishnan had a great sense of humour. When the king of Greece came on a state visit to India in 1962, Radhakrishnan welcomed him saying, “Your Majesty, you are the first king of Greece to come as our guest. Alexander came uninvited! ”
  4. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature for five consecutive years. He won several prestigious awards including Bharat Ratna in 1954. He was also awarded with the Templeton Prize in 1975 for promoting the notion of a universal reality of God that embraced love and wisdom for all people.
  5. When Radhakrishnan held the position of India’s President, he had accepted Rs 2,500 out of Rs 10,000 salary and donated the remaining amount to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund every month.

Teachers Day is observed on September 5 in India. This day is observed on the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was the first vice President of India. He was a teacher and he wanted that his birth anniversary should be observed as Teachers Day across the nation. On this day, the students send hearty wishes and gifts to their teachers and mentors. However, there is one such gift apart from the wisdom that the Indian teachers gave us, yes you guessed it right, we are talking about the phrases that we all heard at one point in our school days.

So, ahead of Teachers Day, let’s cherish the memories and go back down memory lane to look at the phrases used by Indian teachers.

Is this a fish market?

This is the most common phrase used by Indian teachers and whenever students in the classroom started talking or making noise, the teachers used to yell and say, “Is this a fish market?”

I’ve never dealt with a class like this, you are the worst batch

While we were asking people that if they’ve heard this phrase, 10 out of 7 people said yes. And, the other 3 said that they were not the best class, then we have a question that who was the best class?

Khana to khaana nahi bhoolte, homework karna bhool jate ho

People also told us that whenever they used to forget to do their homework, the common phrase that was used by teachers was “khana to khaana nahi bhoolte par homework karna bhool jate ho” which means you do not forget to eat but you forget to bring homework.

When we were in school…

When the teachers used to come up with this phrase, it was quite clear that a story of their school days is going to come up and that would mean that no study today, only storytime!

Empty vessels make more noise

This phrase was used for all the backbenchers who used to hoot for no reason, and after that, the whole class used to crack up because that was funny at that time. But but but.. that was not it, then there comes the superhero teachers who used to yell and say “empty vessels make more noise.”
