Former Team India coach Ravi Shastri has revealed how his job instantly changed from commentator to Team India director.

Talking about the circumstances that led to his appointment as the team director in 2014, Shastri said he had received no warning. He was commentating at Oval in England when he got 7 missed calls, he said.

In the spur of a moment, Shastri was asked by the BCCI to take over as India’s director and the rest of the things would be taken care of by them. But he told them he would have to speak to his family and commercial partners but they just said they would sort all that out. And like that, I was straight in from the commentary box, he said.

Shastri also said everyone had seen him wearing jeans and loafers when he joined Team India during the ODIs.

Shastri served as Team India’s director from 2014 to 2016. Again in 2017, Shastri took over as Team India head coach after Anil Kumble’s unceremonious exit. His tenure as Team India’s head coach ended with India’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2021 which was hosted by India in the UAE.

Shastri’s more than a four-year-long stint as the India head coach was go down as one of the most glittering ones in the country’s cricketing history. He did not have an ICC trophy to show like a John Wright or a Gary Kirsten but the historic Test series wins in Australia (twice) and in England put him right in the top bracket. Under his coaching, India enjoyed unprecedented success in red-ball cricket between 2017 and November 2021.
