A joint team of Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police gunned down two terrorists in the Union Territory’s Kupwara district as they foiled a cross-border infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) on Wednesday.

In an official statement, Srinagar-based defence spokesman, Col. Emron Musavi, said that two terrorists were shot dead in a joint operation by the Indian Army and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday following specific intelligence from SSP Kupwara warning of likely infiltration from one of the terrorist launch pads across the LoC towards Machil sector.

The defence spokesman said that following the intel received from SSP Kupwara, the troops were put on high alert and a well coordinated counter infiltration grid was put in place in the north Kashmir district’s rugged and extreme terrain on Monday, adding that several additional ambushes of the Indian Army and J&K Police’s SOG were placed along the likely routes of infiltration.

Col. Musavi said the security forces endured two continous nights of harsh weather marked by incessant rainfall, poor visibility and freezing night temperatures and eventually spotted the terrorists trying to infiltrate into Indian territory on early Wednesday morning.

He said the terrorists opened fire on the troops which was returned and a gunfight ensued in which two terrorists were shot dead, adding that the bodies of the two ultras have been recovered along with arms, ammunition and explosive devices.

The defence spokesman said that following the gunfight, an extensive search operation was launched by the security forces and the area is being combed for the presence of more infiltrators, adding that the identity and affiliation of the two slain terrorists is being ascertained.

Colonel Musavi said the successful intelligence-based operation highights the close synergy and coordination between different security agencies, especially the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, in their steadfast stand to rid the conflict-riddled valley from the scourge of terrorism and insurgency.
