Pranab Mukherjee’s memoirs titled The Presidential Years has caused rift between his son and daughter and Congress leaders Abhijit Mukherjee and Sharmistha Mukherjee, respectively. While, Abhijit has asked the publication house to not publish the book till he gives his written consent, Sharmistha has accused her brother of seeking cheap publicity asking him to not create unnecessary hurdles in the publication of the book.

Earlier in the day , Abhijit Mukherjee had tagged Rupa Publications on Twitter asking it to stop the publication of his father’s memoirs until he gives his written consent for the same. Mukherjee took to micro-blogging platform Twitter and said motivated excerpts were floating in certain media platforms without his written consent.

Since my father is no more , I being his son want to go through the contents of the final copy of the book before it’s publication as I believe , had my father been alive today , he too would have done the same.

Mukherjee added that he would like to go through the contents of the final copy of the memoirs before it’s published. He added that his father would have done the same, had he been alive today. Mukherjee informed that he has written a detailed letter to the publishing house regarding the same.

Hitting back at her brother Sharmistha asked him to not to create unnecessary hurdles as their father had completed the manuscript before falling sick. She said stopping the publication for cheap publicity would be a great disservice to Mukherjee. She also corrected her brother for getting the name of the book wrong.

In the memoirs, Mukherjee wrote that some members were of the congress were of the opinion that had he become the Prime minister in 20014 instead of Dr Manmohan Singh, the congress would have not lost power.

“Some members of the Congress have theorized that, had I become the PM in 2004, the party might have averted the 2014 Lok Sabha drubbing. Though I don’t subscribe to this view, I do believe that the party’s leadership lost political focus after my elevation as president. While Sonia Gandhi was unable to handle the affairs of the party, Dr (Manmohan) Singh’s prolonged absence from the House put an end to any personal contact with other MPs,” an excerpt from the book reads.
