Taking a fresh jibe at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Trinamool Congress (TMC) warned the Central government against the Agnipath Scheme. Concerned about the pitfalls of the controversial defense recruitment scheme, TMC pointed out Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s assassination by a short service ex-servicemen.

The attacker of Shinzo Abe was in the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force for three years before losing his job and was also not getting a pension. TMC’s mouthpiece Jago Bangla in an article said that the death of Abe at the hands of an ex-serviceman has only validated the fears of the people over the Agnipath scheme.

Referring to Abe’s attacker, the article claimed that Agniveers too would not get any pension after their four-year service period. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that the BJP is playing with fire in the name of the Agnipath scheme. We have seen what has happened in Japan. An ex-serviceman killed the former Prime Minister, he added.

Following the attack, BJP issued a clarification that there hasn’t been any case happened where ex-servicemen of our country are involved in such matters. The TMC is just trying to politicize the matter, said state BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya.

Agnipath, which was launched on June 14, aims to hire young people between the agesĀ of 17 and a half and 21 for just four years, with the provision to retain 25 percent of them for anotherĀ 15 years. The maximum age for 2022 has been extended to 23 years because of the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on recruitment.
