[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A 27-year-old woman named Tushara was allegedly harassed and starved to death by her husband and mother-in-law for dowry.

According to the police, Tushara was starved for an unknown period of time by her husband and in-laws.

For days, she survived only on soaked rice and sugar syrup and weighed only 20 kg when she died last week, the police said today.

Tushara, a native of Karunagappally near Kollam, was brought to the Kollam District Hospital on March 21.

She was declared brought dead by the hospital, but with suspicions being raised about the cause of death, her body was taken to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College for an autopsy.

The autopsy report revealed that there were scars on her body that shows she was physically tortured by her husband and in-laws and was starved for an unknown period of time.

“She looked like a bag of a skeleton with hardly any flesh on her body. She weighed just 20 kg. A detailed inquiry has thrown light to the cruelty. Her relatives alleged that the torture was to get more dowry,” a police official told PTI.

The police on Friday arrested the victim’s husband Chanthu Lal (30) and his mother Geetha (55). The victim’s two children are currently under the protection of Childline Kollam.

Tushara’s mother Vijayalakshmi alleged the accused had been torturing her daughter for the past five years and had not allowed the family members to meet her for one year.

“My daughter had suffered gruesome torture. We did not give any police complaint as we feared it would put my daughter’s life in danger,” she said.

The woman’s husband used to do odd jobs other than welding works. The couple married in 2013. At the time of the marriage, the woman’s family had given some gold ornaments and money to the man’s family and had promised to give Rs 2 lakh later.

The deceased woman had two children the younger aged 1.5 years and the other is three-year-old both of them are healthy, the police official said.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
