Four people have been booked for alleged discrepancies in the traffic inspector recruitment exam conducted by the Himachal Pradesh Staff Selection Commission (HPSSC) in 2022.

According to reports, the four accused have been booked for cheating, criminal conspiracy, and bribery after investigations by the state vigilance and anti-corruption bureau into the alleged discrepancies and paper leak in the recruitment of six traffic inspectors.

Reports quoting sources said that the Himachal Pradesh vigilance department—which is probing several cases of alleged paper leaks in various recruitment exams in the state—has uncovered incriminating evidence in the conduct of exam for the post of traffic inspector conducted by the HPSSC which had invited 35,053 applicants.

The exam results were declared in January 2022 and initial investigations had revealed that seven days after the written exam, a candidate had transferred Rs 10,000 were transferred to the accused.

The incriminating revelation led to a case being lodged under sections 420, 201, 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 7, 7A, 8, 12 Prevention of Corruption Act against four accused, including Uma Azad and her two sons.

The prime accused, Uma Azad—a former HPSSC senior superintendent—was caught red-handed by the vigilance sleuths while selling the question paper for Junior Office Assistant (IT) exam on December 23 last year.

The Himachal Pradesh vigilance department is currently investigating 20 examinations held in the past three years, an official said.

Notably, the Himachal Pradesh government had suspended the functioning of the HPSSC over the paper leaks and postponed all future exams before dissolving the commission.

The forensic experts examining the electronic devices recovered by the state vigilance department in the case had earlier found question papers, financial transactions, voice recordings and chats during the scrutiny of electronic data retrieved from the devices of the accused which indicated that papers were also leaked in the past exams.
