Indian-origin Conservative Party member Rishi Sunak today lost the race for the United Kingdom’s (UK) prime minister post. His opponent and former foreign secretary Liz Truss was chosen for the next prime minister.

She will be the UK’s third female prime minister after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May and the fourth Conservative party’s prime minister.

Reports said that about 57 per cent of valid votes cast were for Liz Truss. She got 81,326 votes while Rishi Sunak got 60, 399 votes from the party members. Around 82 per cent of members cast their votes.

Rishi Sunak thanked all colleagues, and campaign team members for their support during the elections.

He said that the Conservatives were one family. They should now be united behind the new PM, Liz Truss as she steered the country through difficult times.

Liz Truss shared her happiness on Twitter and said that she was honoured to be elected as the leader of the Conservative Party. She thanked party members for putting their trust in her to lead and deliver for the great country.

She claimed that she would take bold actions to get all of them through these tough times, grow their economy, and unleash the United Kingdom’s potential.

Underlining the challenges and cost of living for every citizen, she said that she would take decisive action to ensure families and businesses could get through this winter.

She said that as prime minister, she would unleash Britain’s potential by going for growth and removing the obstacles holding the country back. A growing economy was key to delivering for the British people and unlocking opportunity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Liz Truss for being chosen to be the next PM and said that under her leadership, the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership would be further strengthened.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson greeted India on its Republic Day through a video message on Tuesday. In a special reference to the vaccine collaboration, Johnson said the UK and India are working side by side to free humanity from the coronavirus pandemic in his Republic Day message.

Johnson was supposed to be in New Delhi as the chief guest to mark India’s 72nd Republic Day. Due to the crisis occurred by the emergence of a new coronavirus variant in the UK, he had to call off his visit.

Reiterating his plan to visit India in the coming months, Johnson sent out a message to celebrate the birth of an extraordinary Constitution that established India as the biggest sovereign democracy in the world. 

He said he was looking forward to joining the important occasion at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but the common struggle against Covid-19 has kept him in London. However, Johnson looked forward to visiting India later this year to strengthen friendship, striving for the quantum leap in the relationship with PM Modi which both of them pledged to achieve.

In his video message, he said the two countries are working side by side to develop, produce and distribute vaccines that will help to free humanity from the pandemic. Thanking the combined efforts of Britain, India and many other countries, he claimed that the world is on road to success against the coronavirus.

The UK Prime Minister also addressed the Indian diaspora in the UK, and said the virus is compelling people to stay apart, including family and friends in Britain and India, which according to PM Modi form the living bridge between the two countries. But for now, he wished everyone in India as well as those celebrating Republic Day in Britain, a very happy Republic Day.
