The top member of the Wagner mercenary group promised on Saturday to go to the end to overthrow the Russian military hierarchy after accusing them of attacking his troops, even as the prosecutor general of the nation stated he was being looked into for armed rebellion.

Yevgeny Prigozhin said in an audio message, they are moving forward and they will go to the end.

The biggest threat to President Vladimir Putin since the commencement of the operation in Ukraine last year, he said, they will destroy everything that stands in their way.

Later, he asserted that a Russian military helicopter had been shot down by his troops.

Just now, a column of civilians came under fire from a chopper. Units from PMC Wagner fired gunshots at it, he claimed.

Prigozhin earlier said, his men, who have led much of Russia’s offensive, had penetrated the Rostov region in the south of the country, but they provided no evidence and AFP was unable to verify his claims independently.

According to sources, officials in Moscow have increased security measures and “put under reinforced protection important installations.

Wagner combatants were urged to take measures to detain Prigozhin by the FSB security service.

The Kremlin said, Putin received daily information on the developing hostilities between the Wagner group and the defence ministry.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, prosecutor general Igor Krasnov had informed Putin of initiating a criminal case in connection with an attempt to organise an armed rebellion.

The unprecedented events occurred after Prigozhin accused Moscow of launching lethal missile attacks at his forces.

The Russian military fired missiles at our backup camps. A series of enraged audio recordings from Prigozhin was issued by his spokespeople, in which he lamented the loss of several of his warriors and companions.

The PMC Wagner Council of Commanders has decided that the evil that the nation’s military leadership brings must be stopped.

There are 25,000 forces, he said, calling on the Russians to join him and admonishing them not to oppose his troops.

The matter between Ukraine and Russia has intensified. Amid fears of the growing threat of a Russian invasion, Ukraine has declared a nationwide state emergency. Ukraine’s security and defence council secretary Oleksiy Danilov said the state of emergency would last for 30 days and can be extended for another 30 days.

Ukraine has ordered its citizens in Russia to leave right away, as Moscow prepares to evacuate its embassy in Kyiv in the latest ominous signs of an all-out Russian military offensive.

The state of emergency enables regional governments in Ukraine to implement extra stringent security measures, such as tighter ID and vehicle checks and increased policing.

They apply to all of Ukraine, with the exception of two Russian-backed separatist regions in the east, where a vicious insurgency has claimed the lives of over 14,000 people in the last two years.

What happens when a country declares a state of emergency?

A state of emergency is a condition in which the government is given the authority to take actions or implement policies that it would not normally be allowed to do. The measures include the right to impose curfews, prevent demonstrations or mass gatherings, lockdown public spaces, or allow police to conduct searches without warrants.

During a natural disaster, a medical pandemic/epidemic, civil disturbance, or military conflict, a government can declare a state of emergency. People are warned to change their normal behaviour, and government entities are instructed to take emergency precautions. Human rights and fundamental freedoms must be respected within the restrictions set by relevant international and national law provisions during a state emergency.

During a critical state of emergency, all citizen’s rights are revoked. People are not allowed to travel and gather, among many things.
