A CCTV video has surfaced recently showing the men who shot Umesh Pal, entering the Bareilly jail in Uttar Pradesh to meet with Khalid Azim alias Ashraf Ahmed—the slain gangster who was shot dead last week along with his brother Atiq Ahmed.

The video which is purportedly from February 11, days before Umesh Pal was shot dead, shows all eight shooters entering the Bareilly jail for allegedly meeting Ashraf Ahmed and plan Pal’s murder. The purported meeting, reportedly went on for over 2 hours and 30 minutes and all eight men, who are accused of shooting Umesh Pal were present.

Reports said that Ashraf had applied for a meeting in the jail under the name of Mohammad Azhar and also used the Asad Ahmed’s Aadhaar card to have him enter the jail.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azeem alias Ashraf Ahmed were gunned down in front of the Uttar Pradesh police while they were on their way for a medical checkup at a hospital in Prayagraj last week.

In a mafia-style shooting, three gunmen, posing as journalists, shot and killed the Ahmad brothers on camera and later surrendered before the police.

Gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, had recently been convicted in the Umesh Pal kidnapping and murder case.

Earlier, Atiq’s 19-year-old son Asad Ahmad, was shot dead in an encounter by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police in Jhansi.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday announced that a three-member judicial commission will probe the gangster’s brazen killing.

Umesh Pal, then a zila panchayat member, had come forward as the prime witness in BSP MLA Raju Pal’s murder, who was killed on January 25, 2005.

Umesh Pal had claimed that Atiq Ahmad and aides kidnapped him at gunpoint on February 28, 2006 after he refused retract his statement given to the police in the BSP leader’s killing. Based on his complaint, the police on July 5, 2007, had lodged an FIR against Ahmed, his brother, and others.

The UP Police had submitted a chargesheet in the matter against 11 accused. One of them later died.

On February 24 this year, Umesh Pal was shot dead along with his two security men in Prayagraj. Atiq and his brother—who were both in jail at the time—were also the accused in the conspiracy to assassinate Umesh Pal.

Jailed gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad’s son, Asad, was on Thursday killed in an encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police in Jhansi.

According to reports, Mohammad Asad Ahmad and another man, identified as Ghulam—both wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case and each carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on their heads—were gunned down by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police in Jhansi.

They said that a team of UP Police’s STF led by Deputy SP Navendu and Deputy SP Vimal, killed the gangster’s son and an associate during a gunfight, adding that sophisticated foreign-made weapons were recovered from the slain men.

Earlier today, Atiq Ahmad was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Prayagraj in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case.

Last month, Ahmad was pronounced guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case by an MP-MLA court in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj and handed a life-sentence along with two others, while his brother, Khalid Azim alias Ashraf and six other accused in the case were acquitted.

Special MP-MLA court judge Dinesh Chandra Shukla pronounced the guilty verdict against Atiq Ahmad, Lawyer Saulat Hanif and Dinesh Pasi under section 364-A (kidnapping or abduction in order to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which carries the death penalty as the maximum sentence.

Justice Shukla sentenced the guilty trio to 14 years life imprisonment in the case.

On Sunday, a 45-member team of the Uttar Pradesh Police arrived at the Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad to escort Atiq Ahmed to UP to produce him before the special court in Prayagraj in the Umesh Pal abduction case.

Earlier today, reports said that ahead of the hearing, security was heightened outside the Prayagraj court and security personnel were also deployed outside the residence of Ahmed as well as that of his advocate as well.

Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal earlier said she won’t attend the hearing but had prayed for Ahmed to be sentenced to death for her husband’s murder.

On Jaya Pal’s complaint, a case a case was lodged at the Dhoomanganj police station in Prayagraj against Ahmed, his brother, his wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

According to the police, Ahmed is named in the Umesh Pal murder case and in over 100 others of criminal nature.

Gangster-turned politician Atiq Ahmed will be produced before the MP-MLA court in Uttar Pradesh’s today amid heightened security at the court as well as Ahmed’s residence and that of his lawyer.

Officials said that security has been heightened outside the Prayagraj court ahead of the hearing in the Umesh Pal abduction case and security personnel have also been deployed outside the residence of Ahmed and that of his advocate as well.

Prayagraj District Bar Association said the MP-MLA court of Prayagraj has cleared its schedule for today and will only hear Umesh Pal case.

The Bar Association in a statement said that Presiding Officer of MP MLA Court has written to Minister of District Advocates Association wherein it was requested to pronounce a verdict in the case today itself.

An accused in the Umesh Pal abduction case, gangster-turned politician Atiq Ahmed was brought from Gujarat’s Sabarmati Jail to Prayagraj’s Naini jail on Monday after a near 24-hour long drive from Gujarat. He will be produced in the MP-MLA court today and a verdict is expected.

He was under arrest for taking contract to kill a big leader. The then SOG in-charge OP Tiwari arrested Guddu and one of his accomplices from Sultanpur from outside the jail.

At that time, during interrogation, it was revealed that the miscreant of Gorakhpur lodged in Beur Jail had given Guddu a betel nut to kill a prominent leader of western Uttar Pradesh. Two gunners engaged in his security were also seriously injured and one of them died. While the other was seriously injured. The incident took place on Friday at 5:15 pm when Umesh had reached his home in Dhumanganj by car from the district court.

After the incident, the attackers fled on the bike. Gunner Sandeep Nishad, posted in security, also died during treatment, while the condition of second gunner Raghvendra Singh remains critical. Raju Pal, who was the MLA of City West, was murdered on January 25, 2005 in Dhumanganj area. His relative and friend Umesh Pal was the main witness in this case.

Umesh had advocated the Raju Pal murder case from the Lower Court to the Supreme Court. For this reason, he had open enmity with the Atiq gang.
