Each year, on September 21, International Day of Peace or World Peace Day is observed. This day seeks to remind people of all races and all nations to think about universal peace. The occasion aims to strengthen peace across nations by observing 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire.

Since the world is healing from the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s theme for the International Day of Peace is: Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world.

This year, the day started off when the United Nations Peace Bell is rung at UN Headquarters, in the New York. The bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents except Africa, and was a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan, as a reminder of the human cost of war. The inscription on its side reads long live absolute world peace.

The United Nations says on its website: In 2021, as we heal from the Covid-19 pandemic, we are inspired to think creatively and collectively about how to help everyone recover better, how to build resilience, and how to transform our world into one that is more equal, more just, equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and healthier.

The United Nations said in its statement that the coronavirus pandemic has hit the underprivileged and marginalized groups the hardest. Pointing out the inequality around the world especially amidst the pandemic, the organisation said that by April 2021, over 687 million COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered globally, but over 100 countries have still not received a single dose.

The United Nations General Assembly in 1981 laid the foundation of the International Day of Peace. After two decades, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.
