After winning hearts with her Hybrid Bharatnatyam, dancer-choreographer Usha Jey has yet again taken social media with her Kuthu performance at Vogue’s magazine 130th anniversary in New York City.

For those unversed, Dappankuthu or Kuthu is a folk dance and music genre of Tamil Nadu. The dance form is informal with repeated steps and is mainly used in Tamil cinema and other Tollywood films. No special costume is used while performing the dance form. While men wear a lungi, women don a simple saree for Kuthu.

Jey gave a sneak peek of her Kuthu’s performance with fellow dancers as she shared a video on Instagram. She also penned a heartfelt note with the video and thanked Redha Medjellekh, a choreographer, for trusting her vision and making sure the Indian culture is well represented in such a huge event.

She also shared her elation after performing in front of celebrities including Anna Wintour, Kanye West, and Montero.

Usha Jey’s performance has surely won hearts online as users applauded Jey’s troop for representing the Kuthu dance in such a huge event.

Jey rose to prominence after her fusion dance of Hip-Hop and Bharatanatyam went viral and garnered over 5 million views.

Speaking of the same, Jey, in an old interview, had said the dance form is called hybrid Bharatanatyam which is an attempt to cover the long distance between the two dance forms. After the video of Usha Jey’s hybrid Bharatanatyam surfaced online, she was called upon to perform Tamil Nadu’s Kuthu at Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 in the UK.

Fusion dances are always fun to watch, especially when they are Indo-Western. Usha Jey, the choreographer of Hybrid Bharatanatyam, has recently gone viral on social media for her exquisite blending of cultural boundaries. Usha’s latest video is doing the rounds on internet and is winning the hearts of people with her performance. Her latest dance video features a hybrid of hip-hop and Bharatanatyam. 

A Sri Lankan based in Paris uploaded a video of her dance that blends hip-hop with Indian classical. She is seen shaking her leg to Lil Wayne’s Uproar. She captions the video, What the f-though? Where the love go?

Usha also wrote about the fusion dance. She said, I call this Hybrid Bharatham and this is my way of switching between Hip-Hop and Bharatanatyam, 2 dances that I love, learn, and respect. My aim is to keep the essence of each dance and create something that does justice to who I am, she added.

Usha has been doing Hip-Hop for nine years and Bharatnatyam for four. She holds a Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Project Management as well. Jey is a true-blue millennial hybrid, balancing her Tamil roots with her French existence on a daily basis with her dance series.

It’s a dance that people start young, but I started when I was 19-20 years old, which was already a challenge, Usha said when asked what drove her to begin learning Indian classical at the age of 20.

She further said, she enjoys watching this dance and thinks it is lovely. It’s so fascinating that I’ve started taking classes and studying them. I don’t mind starting things late because I believe that everyone has their own time zone. I’d rather do something late than never, she added.

The Hybrid Bharatnatyam series premiered in December 2019, and with just three episodes, it has already earned accolades from Raja Kumari, a trained Indian classical dancer.
