The Supreme Court on Monday granted a four-month jail sentence to fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya for contempt of court. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on the former Member of Parliament.

Vijay Mallya was found guilty of contempt of court in 2017 for withholding information from the court. The case was presented before a three-judge bench- Justices UU Lalit, S Ravindra Bhat, and PS Narasimha.

Vijay Mallya is held guilty of transferring USD 40 million to his children in defiance of the court’s order. The businessman didn’t appear before the court despite several orders from Supreme Court.

On February 10, the Supreme Court announced that Vijay Mallya has two weeks left to personally appear or be represented by counsel in the contempt case being brought against him. If he does not, the court would proceed to the next stage.

Vijay Mallya was found guilty on two counts. It was claimed that he was violating the restraint orders by failing to disclose the assets and, on top of that, by giving them to his children.

The Supreme Court said Mallya has been given ample opportunities since November 30 last year to appear before the court either in person or through a lawyer.

Mallya was allegedly not adhering to court orders over the repayment of a loan worth over Rs 9,000 crores. A consortium of banks led by the State Bank of India filed a petition with India’s top court.

The top court last year decided to proceed with the hearing on the severity of the sentence in the contempt case against Vijay Mallya despite the fact that it had waited long enough and couldn’t wait longer now.
