Kamalrukh Khan, the wife of late musician Wajid Khan, shared a post on her instagram handle on Sunday in which she alleged that after her marriage her husband’s family started forcing her to to convert to Islam.

Kamalrukh said she respects every faith and religion but getting forced by her husband’s family to convert to Islam made her relationship with Wajid very toxic. She said her dignity and self-respect did not permit her to bend backwards for him and his family, by converting to Islam. Kamalrukh concluded by saying that even after her husband’s death, harassment by Wajid’s family continues.

Through her instagram post, Kamalrukh said she and Wajid were college sweethearts who got married under the Special Marriages Act. She further added that she is a Parsi and her husband was a Muslim, and the act allowed them to get married while practicing their own religions. But after some time she started getting pressure from his family to convert to Islam, she added.

She further said she has a simple Parsi upbringing and it was very democratic in its value system. However, post marriage, this same independence, education and democratic value system was the biggest problem for my husband’s family. An educated, thinking, independent woman with an opinion was just not acceptable and resisting the pressures of conversion was sacrilege.

Wajid died in May this year after a cardiac arrest. He had also tested positive for the coronavirus. Wajid was the part of the music-composer duo, Sajid-Wajid, with his brother Sajid Khan. Kamalrukh said that her children and she miss him but she wished he had spend more time with them and without religious prejudices.
