Facebook and its other apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp faced a major outage that was almost for 8 hours on Monday. After perfect 8 hours of sleep, without checking dutifully the three social media platforms, users were able to get back to their normal social media use in the early hours of Tuesday.

Facebook and its family of apps crashed on Monday and users were not able to send and receive messages. Moreover, they were not even able to refresh their news feeds.

Facebook informed about the outage and said that they feel sorry that their users around the world and people and businesses across the globe who depend on them are facing inconvenience.

The social media giant further said that they’ve been working as hard as they can to restore access and their systems are now back up and running.

What was the cause of the outage?

Facebook said that their engineering teams got to know that the configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between their data centres caused issues and that became the reason for the outage.

According to Downdetector, more than 73,000 problems with WhatsApp were recorded. It was mentioned that 43 per cent of the WhatsApp problems were linked with the app and 28 per cent were related to sending messages.

The Communications head of Facebook, Andy Stone, said that they are aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. They are working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.

It is also reported that the outage became the reason for Mark Zuckerberg’s loss and the company’s stock crashed by around 5 per cent within hours of the outage.
