A heart-wrenching incident has come to light from West Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman district where a middle-aged woman died at a railway station while waiting for the train after the hospital failed to provide her with an ambulance while directing her to a larger medical facility.

The incident happened at the Bhatar Railway Station. The deceased, identified as 50-year-old Maneka Koda, and her husband Asit were waiting at the railway station to take a train to Bardhaman where she was referred for medical treatment.

Reports state Maneka and her husband used to work as daily wage labourers in Kachigoria village when she suffered from heat stroke. He husband took her to the Bhatar Hospital where she was given two bottles of saline.

Looking at her condition, the hospital referred her to Bardhaman Medical College and Hospital. But the hospital didn’t provide her with an ambulance and asked Asit to take her by private vehicle. Because of insufficient money, Asit decided to take his wife by train.

The couple reached the railway station on an e-rickshaw and were waiting for the train under a tree when Maneka breathed her last.

The incident caused outrage among locals who accused the hospital authorities of negligence. Responding to the allegations, the hospital authorities claimed that their ambulance had broken down and was being repaired.

The health department is currently investigating the matter.

Earlier in January, a similar incident took place where a man from Jalpaiguri was forced to carry his mother’s body on his shoulder for several kilometers after the hospital ambulance drivers refused to drive him back unless he paid Rs 3,000 to transport her mortal remains.
